  • DYR Foods Ltd!

Researching and writing about food all too often has me thinking about how much better various foods used to be from their looks to their taste to their marketing.

This brought me to the fun idea of a DYR Foods Ltd - fictional of course before the moderators jump in We have sat through manufacturers changing brand names, switching to nasty plastic packaging, removing those fun freebies from our foods, rubbishing iconic brand characters, downsizing confectionery and changing recipes so it is time we showed them how to do it.

If you could take control of all our iconic food brands, in dream team sort of way what of their products over the years - including packaging, marketing ploys, brand characters etc - would you like to see brought back to life in the DYR Foods Ltd range?

To kick things off, here’s a few confectionery items from me:

Rowntrees Lion Bar: larger and better tasting than Nestlé’s.

Cadbury Fruit and Nut: gold foil and paper packaging and ‘Fruit and Nut Case’ ad.

Cadbury Dairy Milk: silver foil and paper packaging.

Cadbury Caramel: not Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel (what on earth that rebrand was about I don’t know), old packaging and Cadbury bunny ads.

Cadbury Fuse: I know I’m not alone in wanting to see this one back.

    Smarties: In round tube packaging.

Curly Wurly: original size and recipe.

Jacob’s Club: Old paper and foil packaging, original recipe, and ‘Join our Club’ ads.

Penguins: Original size, foil grease proof paper packaging and ‘P...P...Pick Up a Penguin’ ads.

In a white round tube, with all the artificial colours and flavours back in so they are really bright (these days they are really pale and insipid) and they have that nice taste when you first suck them (that has gone with the modern ones too)

      DYR Foods will bring back:

      1. Crosse & Blackwell baked beans

      2. Golly on Robertson's Jam: we survived without political correctness!

      3. Coca-Cola in glass bottles

      4. Pepsi's old marketing slogan: Come Alive with Pepsi

One thing it shouldn't bring back, though, is ham, luncheon meat, corned beef etc in tins. Those things were murder to open, especially when the key broke off.
The present is a foreign country. They do things differently here.

I couple of years ago, I saw a child in a pub garden drinking coke through a straw, and it was a glass bottle. It reminded me of my youth when I would do the same. So I think that maybe, glass bottles still exist.

Yes they do, I had one in Austria earlier in the summer, so I'm sure they will still exist here too.

Wouldn't want those horrible paper straws back though. A couple of sucks and the whole thing would collapse.

You can still get tinned meats, though I'm not sure if they still have keys, these days many tins have ring pulls.

Crosse & Blackwell baked beans were dropped because they couldn't compete with loss leading beans, "we could sell tinned air at their prices"

I always though it funny that the ham came in those weird tear drop shaped tins. I think some of them still do, though I can't be sure of the key situation. My parents have bowed at the altar of Pek chopped pork for years. I was put off for life having had my fill of pek chopped pork sandwiches as a child. Never really liked it but their cupboards are still full of it today. I don't even know what chopped pork is.

Another thing I'd like back is tins of Peek Freans biscuits. Whatever happened to them? They've still got them in Canada. Treated myself to a packet of NICE-type Peek Freans biscuits when I was there and I was transported back to the good old days.

My Mum kept a Peak Freans Family Circle tin around for years for storing cakes in.

Peek Freans was a brand. They made all different types of biscuits and the ones I remember most were the variety tins. I can't remember them having chocolate ones though. It was mostly your custard cream, nice, jam ring type affair, but they did have a particular taste.

Peek Freens biscuits were really nice. You could buy them in packs as well as the variety tins. My favourites were the nice ones! No other company can make a nice as tasty as Peek Freens (IMO)!!!!!

Hmmm, custard creams...now you are making me hungry. Anyways, here’s a few more from me:

Cartoonies – loved them...why did they stop making them?

Milk Teeth sweets - again, loved them but, apparently, they are no more.

Shreddies Hunger monster with those great ‘...keeps Hunger locked up till lunch’ ads. Sorry, but the current Granny ads are cringe worthy at best and stomach turning at worst.

Honey Nut Loops with Loopy’s ‘Honey Nut Loops...let’s loop together’ ads.

Weetabix Chex cereal with POGS promotion – strangely I have found virtually no references to this cereal online.

Walkers with Tazo’s promotion – yep, I loved my Tazo’s and POGS!

Four-finger Kit Kat: none of that plastic rubbish...foil and paper packaging all the way.

Sun Maid Raisin Bread: This might be one just for me but Sun Maid Raisins were a regular feature of my lunchbox growing up and I love their little box design as much now as I did then. We used to get their bread product quite often but nowadays the shops don’t seem to do it even though it is still listed on the manufacturer’s site.

                              Regards,

                              Matthew
