Re: the great storm of 1987

I don't remember the storm as such, but our teacher got the class to bring in newspaper cuttings of the storm and we stuck them on a big board/collage that formed part of our weather project. I took in a picture of a lady using a telephone box that had part of a big tree leaning against it!!

I also slept through it, we were also moving house the morning after the storm and that's the only reason i remember it.

I was living in Lincolnshire at the time, so avoided the storm itself. But I had been planning a drive down to London on the day after the storm; after seeing the mess, I decided to postpone the trip. Parts were still looking pretty battered when I went down a couple of weeks later.

I hitch hiked through it from Hull to Bulford trying to make first parade next morning. Got worse the further South West I got, last couple of hours where really quite hairy. Made back for parade though.

I remember seeing on the news a mk1/2 Ford Escort van in red crushed by a tree.

              Great storm ?

I wonder how the press would've reported it had it been further North ? (If they'd have reported it at all)

I remember at the time my Dad complaining about how much converage it got because of the Media being mostly London based.

More recently flooding in Oxfordshire was in the news more (not helped by being in David Cameron's seat!) than flooding in Sunderland & Hull.

To be fair it was a hurricane, I'm sure it would have received a lot of coverage if it was further north.

Last year's flooding in Newcastle received a lot of coverage and was featured in a recent weather documentary on Channel 4, sometimes the southern based media bias is real and sometimes it is perceived.

I live in Kent, so I remember the Great Storm quite well. I woke in the night to hear the sound of tiles moving down our roof (actually, we didn't lose that many, and it was quickly repaired), but I recall looking out of my window that night and seeing a fire engine rushing down the road. The sound of the wind was incredible, and it was mixed with occasional flashes of lightning. The following day, I was unable to get to school (I was 15 at the time). I helped my dad put plastic sheeting up in next door's loft, as they had lost a lot of roof tiles and there were gaping holes in their roof. There were a lot of trees down in the area, one on our local playing field just down the road from our house. It was at this time that I started listening to the local radio a lot, as they had an evening phone-in show and I was interested in hearing people's stories of that night, and I got into music by listening to the songs played - 'You Win Again' by The Bee Gees was number one at the time. I recall hearing that some people in Sevenoaks soon starting receiving letters addressed 'Oneoak'.
