Would classical composers have recognised the pressures and triumphs of their modern counterparts? In spite of phenomena such as MIDI, time code and digital recording, today's composers have the same problem as their forebears - they have to please their patrons, their public and themselves. Tonight's programme celebrates the composer as storyteller, with contemporary writers, directors and composers for theatre, film and television including Barrington Pheloung, John Altman and Dominic Muldowney.
Presented by Neil Brand. Producer Maura Clarke

Lifehouse: the One That Got Away
BBC Radio 1 logo
BBC Radio 1
Sun 11th Feb 1996, 19:00 on BBC Radio 1 England
The rock opera Tommy was not meant to be Pete
Townshend's magnum opus. Instead it should have been a stepping-stone to Lifehouse, a project so ambitious it eventually defeated him.
Although several key songs were salvaged in the album Who's Next, the work they were intended to be part of remains, in Townshend's words, "the one that got away".
