This year marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Jerome Kern and the 50th anniversary of his death. Brian Matthew presents a portrait of the composer including selections from his best-loved scores for stage and screen, such as Show Boat, Roberta and Swing
Time. Also featured is a less well-known side of Kern - that of writer of orchestral scores for the concert hall, and the programme ends with his symphonic poem Mark Twain.
Barry Wordsworth conducts the combined forces of the BBC
Concert Orchestra, led by Martin Loveday , and the BBC Big Band. With guest singers Mary Carewe and Lindsay Benson.
Including at 8.20 Showboats Michael Bevis examines show business on board ship. Producer Tim McDonald
