This week: Sir Bernard Delfont Part 2
Michael Craig continues the stories of the men who create the world of entertainment.
        SIR BERNARD DELFONT Says:
I've always liked to have four or five shows in my mind at the same time. With shows there's nobody who can guarantee success - you must have your flops - they are a great help as long as there aren't too many. You've got to be very philosophical about the whole thing. But I made a point early on that I would only worry about a failure for three days, and if I had a big success I'd only be happy about it for no longer than four days, and then forget about them, and get on with the next thing.
FRANKIE HOWERD says about Sir Bernard:
I've never seen him tearing down the aisle shouting and screaming at anybody - ever! He's very down to earth - I've never known him to be a snob - he's never been big time-he's never been terribly grand - he's always treated one as a fellow worker - a fellow pro, because he was one himself, so he's always thought very much in terms of what the artist's problems were.

The theatre must be treated with respect. It is a house of strange enchantment, a temple of dreams. What it most emphatically is not, and never will be, is a scruffy ill-lit drill hall serving as a soapbox for political propaganda.
In the tenth programme. Sir Noel's career as an actor, play-wright. composer and director is traced through the critically uncertain years immediately following the war and through shows like Sigh No More, Pacific 1860 and Ace of Clubs.
