A three-part history of the Second World War, told by the men and women who fought on the home front, recalling how ordinary families were affected at home, at work and in their leisure hours.
Archive material re-creates what the people at home heard, and they recall how they lived, loved, laughed and worked through the dark days of the war - the years of austerity, rationing, the evacuation of children, wedding nights in the underground, when you couldn't turn a light on and had to "make do and mend".
