Re: old phrases
Noddy Holder - yes, the Noddy Holder - used to present a radio show on Manchester's Piccadilly Radio, and had what he called 'The Swizz Quiz'. It was a swizz because you didn't win anything, it was just the fun of getting the answers right.

Re: old phrases
I've only really seen swizz in comics, the first time I had to ask my Mum what it meant.

I think people still use 'merged' these days! (ducks) ;-)Originally posted by huggie74 View PostMerged
I heard the word 'swizz' on TV the other day - meaning a con of some kind. Hadn't heard that for ages.

Re: old phrases
One of my great aunts used to say "love a duck!" instead of "Oh my God" and would call me Tuppence or Chicken Bit.

Re: Words that have fallen out of use
There was a study of local word usage in the 1950s, mentioned in Bill Bryson's Mother Toungue.

Re: Words that have fallen out of use
Yeah me too, always have done, saying that though, calling the Cinema 'pictures' in my neck of the woods is normal though. A friend of mine who is from down south, was saying in front of some of her work colleagues that she was going to the Cinema, and she got laughed at, and then got told its called 'going to the pictures' in this neck of the woodsOriginally posted by Megawitch View PostI still say 'pictures' for cinema.

Re: Words that have fallen out of use
We had a saying for something that was good or really good in the early 80s. The word was expert.
For example. If somebody had a really nice bike, we would say. That bike is expert.
