I still say 'pictures' for cinema and 'courting' for dating.

another i here very little is cats and dogs as in its raining.

Yeah me too, always have done, saying that though, calling the Cinema 'pictures' in my neck of the woods is normal though. A friend of mine who is from down south, was saying in front of some of her work colleagues that she was going to the Cinema, and she got laughed at, and then got told its called 'going to the pictures' in this neck of the woods

groovy is rarely used now.

I say groovy ALL the time

So do I...have done for years. I started off saying it in a kind of post-modern, ironic way. But it became such second nature to me that I say it without thinking now...

another one i heard a lot back in the day where i live was are you going to the flicks.

seems different parts of the country had there own words for everything.

One of my great aunts used to say "love a duck!" instead of "Oh my God" and would call me Tuppence or Chicken Bit.

I think people still use 'merged' these days! (ducks) ;-)

I heard the word 'swizz' on TV the other day - meaning a con of some kind. Hadn't heard that for ages.

I've only really seen swizz in comics, the first time I had to ask my Mum what it meant.

Noddy Holder - yes, the Noddy Holder - used to present a radio show on Manchester's Piccadilly Radio, and had what he called 'The Swizz Quiz'. It was a swizz because you didn't win anything, it was just the fun of getting the answers right.

Some old fashioned words are just nicer/more descriptive, don't you think?

Eg 'courting' instead of dating, 'frock' instead of dress. My mum still listens to the 'wireless'.

"Swell" is so American. I've never heard anyone British use the word, unless they were parodying one of our American cousins. It's an old term too, as the yanks were using it from the 1930s onwards, if those lovely old classic films are anything to go by.

when the phone rang in our house,people would silently shuffle over to it and answer.Now,they spring up,and say: '' I've Got It! ''.I think everyone's been influenced by films.... lol

And we all used to say the name of the exchange followed by our number (e.g. "Whitehall 1212") but now everyone just says "Hello?" I suppose that might be to do with our growing suspiciousness in society...
