It is with much sadness that i can announce Elisabeth Sladen, the much-loved actress best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and CBBC's The Sarah Jane Adventures, passed away this morning. She was 63.

Lis first appeared as Sarah Jane in Doctor Who in 1973 alongside the Third Doctor Jon Pertwee and stayed for three and half seasons working alongside Jon and the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker. She returned to the role on numerous occasions over the years and, in 2007, was given her own spin-off series on CBBC - The Sarah Jane Adventures - where she would appear alongside new Doctors David Tennant and Matt Smith.

Elisabeth Sladen 1948-2011

I was deeply upset to learn about the passing of Elisabeth Sladen, Doctor Who's Sarah Jane Smith, at the ridiculously young age of 63. Growing up in the 1970s, she was a huge part of my childhood and must have been one of the most familiar faces on TV for awhile. I'm glad she got a second chance to shine in her own series in recent years; she never seemed to age.

I thought it was a mistake when a friend rang yesterday to ask me if I'd heard the news. Lis was a huge part of my childhood and it was wonderful to see her back on TV in recent years. Her passing will be felt deeply by fans young and old.

apparently she had been suffering with cancer for 3 yrs.

Thats really sad. She was one of my favourite Who assistants and seeing her back on the show and in her spin off were brilliant. The Sarah Jane Adventures was far, far more enjoyable than the lurid Torchwood that tries too hard to be adult...Real loss.

Apparently, three stories from series five of The Sarah Jane Adventures were completed-they were shot at the same time as series four last year. Nobody seems to know if they will now be shown or not, though.
