  • RIP George Eastham

George was another member of the World Cup Winning Team of 1966 and he sadly passed on aged 88 the other day

I have sort of heard of George but never personally followed his career. I think he was more of a "fringe" player than like Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore etc but still George was of the very few who was living who had been in our sole World Cup winning Team and all those moons back in '66

    RIP George Eastham

I thought that Geoff Hurst was the last surviving member of the 1966 England World Cup Squad - I suppose he is now.

George Eastham had a street named after him not a million miles away from me.
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
    I'm having so much fun
    My lucky number's one
    Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

Terry Paine & Ian Callaghan are still alive.

It's so sad that nearly all of the squad that produced the greatest day in English football are no longer with us. Yes, I think George was more of a squad member than who would be in the first-choice team, but injuries and suspensions can easily propel such a player into being on the team sheet. RIP George Eastham.

Were they substitutes? They never seemed to get as much prominance as some of those who have since passed away.

They were the wingers in the squad & played in the earlier games when Alf Ramsey wasn't sure the Wingless Wonder would be effective.
