          Re: Playground Songs!

We used to have 2 lines - (it was a girls game but boy's used to play too!) anyway one person would walk down the middle of the line - but had to walk posh and swanky.

"Here comes Susie posh little Susie...."

Then a second person would be push down after her

"Here comes the other one just like the first one"

Then everyone joined hands (including the 2 susie's) and dance in a push/pull kind of way and sing the chorus

"Sillery sallery, sillery sallery...all day long!!!"

You would gradually make your way down the playground and used to end when there was no more room!

We used to play Oranges and Lemons in primary school
Two people would form an arch after secretly decided who was the orange and who was the lemon. Then everyone else would walk throught the arch while singing
            Oranges and lemons,
Say the bells of St. Clement's.

            You owe me five farthings,
Say the bells of St. Martin's.

            When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey.
            When I grow rich,
            Say the bells of Shoreditch.

            When will that be?
            Say the bells of Stepney.
            I'm sure I don't know,
Says the great bell at Bow.

Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
Here comes a chopper to chop off your head.

Chip chop chip chop the last man's head
The last person would be caught and flipped over and asked whether they wanted to be an orange or a lemon. They then stood behind the relevant person. The game would begin again until the last person had chosen, there was then a tug-of-war to see who was stronger between the oranges and lemons

                Staffordshire version of this -
Children stood in a circle - arms raised to form 'Arches' and one child wove in and out of the Arches while everyone sang

In and out the Bluebell Windows
In and out the Bluebell Windows
In and out the Blue bell Windos all day long !

When verse came to an end, the 'weaver' put her hands on the nearest childs shoulders and patted them while everyone sang

Pat a little girl upon her shoulders
Pat a little girl upon her shoulders
pat a little girl upon her shoulders all day long

The two would then swap places and the whole process repeated until the bell went or you all got totally fed up !!

Doing the rounds in Suffolk in the mid-80s:

Mary had a little lamb, she thought it very silly
She threw it in the air one day and caught it by its...

And this is the end of my silly little verse

Under the bramble bushes, down by the sea
True love for you my darling, true love for me
And when we marry, we'll have a family
Boys for you, girls for me,
                                um-tiddly-um-tum, sexeee
(This last line was normally accompanied by the raising of skirts. Or sometimes an attempt to make boys join in by pulling their trousers down.)
