Re: CB RADIO..What was your "Handle" ??

Just read the whole thread through, it was very interesting. The street where I grew up on had a family of 'ill reputation' that had a massive aerial stuck from onside the hut in the back yard. It was taller than the house. I never understood what it was for back then, but I know now that it must have been a CB radio mast. I think he must have been talking to people on the other side of the moon, it really was an impressive mast, I never saw one like that attached to anybody else's house.

When I bought the house I live in now it was a repossessed house. The insides where in really bad nick, and trucker symbols, stickers and train posters were all over the bloody place. There was a cable that was sheared off in what I was decorating to become my game room. The cable looked like it was the source to the TV aerial mounted on the roof, although it would never work when I put connectors on it to hook up my tv set. When I finally got around to converting the loft I found a 20ft rod which I presumed was used for transmitting DB. I think the person that put it up there must have welded it together as I couldn't dismantle it to get it down.

The guy up the street also had aerials towering above his back garden in the early 00's, but they've long since gone, I can't imagine many people using CB in the age of the internet.

I never had a CB radio but one of my neighbors did. He had a very powerful base station which would play havoc with TV reception whenever he was on the air. It wasn't unusual to catch bits of the CB conversation on the TV drowning out the audio from the TV programme.

It only seems to be lorry drivers & long term users that a day to day use of CB these days.

There used to be a specialist shop not far from me which closed about 10 years ago.

Maplins might still sell CB sets, they certainly were a few years ago.

The CB craze was a very short-lived one for me, when I was 13/14.
I used the name Penfold - there were a lot of people calling themselves Dangermouse, so I went for his assistant.
I also remember people wearing bomber jackets with their CB handles written on the back!

The people who are seriously into radio are usually ham radio operators which unlike CB, requires a license. In fact they refer to CB as "Children's Band."

According to Wikipedia you don't need a licence for CB since 2006, & this has a caused a slight rise in interested in CB.

My handle was Pinney the Punk. My original handle was Pinstripe and when I had my first mohawk, a friend suggested it as a joke and it stuck. Been using the name Pinney for the last 30 years. Funny how something that was suggested as a joke has stuck!

The internet proberbly killed CB radio.I was on CB back in the early 80s when it was "FREE"As soon as it was licenced and legalised most people left. The remaining users if there are any are proberbly Truckers?I haven't seen a single car with a CB radio ariel in proberbly over 20 years

The Wikipedia mentions there was a surge in CB sales after they were legalised, but within a few months retailers were struggling to sell stock they had ordered assuming this trend would continue.

In-car & then mobile phones must have reduced the numbers of listeners.

I was the Cheese and Pickle Sandwich. I loved the CB radio, and used it up to 2000. It was brilliant having one in the car and buzzing around meeting people.

A mate had a CB in his car for several years in the early to mid 80's untill the car was broken into at night.Who ever took it knew exactly where the wires had been joined and undone them very carefully.Which was quite odd as the joins were very well hidden.A week later his alarm was taken.

We also had a few radio ariels spring up for a time around the estate. All long gone now.

I noticed one of the houses next to the M66 in Bury has a large CB style ariel on the roof, possibly a owned by a fan speaking to passing lorry drivers?

Jolly Roger because I was a licensed radio ham at the time and so I was pirating on CB!
