Have suggested a new "Transport" section, as its needed IMHO.
I personally don't drive, but I have owned several bikes.
The only time I've ever joined an owners club, was when I owned my MZ ETZ 125
Solid old bike.. got blown down in the '87 storms and got dropped, but you just kicked the metal parts back into shape. Engine was bulletproof!

The family cars, were all old cars (although we didn't learn to drive until early 80's), all of us, took lessons at same time. My parents never had a car during the 70's at all.
Luckily we lived in South London, and Public Transport was never an issue.

First family car was a light Blue Austin 1100, followed by a Honda Civic, Mini Cooper, Volkswagen Scirrocco 2

Correct, rust is a big thing just had bodywork done on my alpine, hope it lasts!

And spares availability is an issue also, but anyone out there who wants to own a retro motor my advice is join the club (we have a good following for simca club uk)

I don't think there is a specific section for classic cars or members cars?Rust was always the killer in the past i think they could have done more but how many people took proper goodcare of there bodywork? and cars always had a designated shelf life,Because if you don't need a new car how can they get you to buy another?

I still drive old cars,my current one is the same age as me.I had a Simca van in the 80s and if you put the handbrake on then reversed,the rear of the car would rise about a foot,funny at the time. (dont think it done it a lot of good though)

These old cars are a rare sight on our roads now.Rust prevention was not a strong point then.My first car was an 1100cc mk 2 escort popular.It was a heap but it gave me my first taste of independance.I had starting problems that no matter what part i replaced kept haunting me i sold it in the end.My next two cars were mk1 ford granadas 3.0 ltr a gl and a gxl.Much more comfort and refinement.My favorite car from "The Sweeney"Till i realised they drove the very simular ford console in the beginning and switched to the ganada later.

Nothing wrong with 70's cars, built to last and easy to fix.
Only downside of owning one now would be corrosion & lack of spares,
but correctly maintained should outlive expectations of the manufacturers.
My uncle also had a Talbot Alpine, his last company car, and his pride and joy.
My first girlfriend that drove (circa 1985) drove a Simca, and I have very fond memories of that motor
I even used to have a tiny model Simca in honour of her trusty old 1100

This or the Solara was nick named the 'time bomb' because of its ticky engine.

My Uncle had a V reg Alpine from 1983 to 1989.

He got it cheap when his company sold off the cars in the fleet that were due them them getting near their first MOT.

It ran fairy well, but became harder to start toward the end.

My friend had a white Allegro and she loved it to bits! I hate it how most people knock cars from the seventies, at least you could open the lid and work on em, not Dealership oriented like mega new stuff! I hate it when someone gets their car smashed up by feckless idiots, sorry!

not sure of that one, but I can tell you one of the best cars I ever owned was my beloved 1976 austin alegro MSO 801P
photo is the same colour as the one I had
I got this car from a neighbour for sweet f/a twas a 1.1 did 96mph flat out
and I used to get about 600 miles out of a tank of fuel
only had 16.000 on the clock when i got it
it had 50.000 when it died
some peshed up prik wrote her off in during a head on collision with me
He came round a corner on the wrong side of the road

Anyone remember these?

I still own one, 27 years old and still a FAB Car! It won Car of the Year in 1976 - bought mine in 93 and I cant complain really!
