  • On This Day

    4th May 1979

    Margaret Thatcher became PM.

Like or loathe her there's no doubt she changed British politics and was a big player on the world stage.

My Grandad had nothing but contempt for her. The air would turn blue and the channel on the tv changed as soon as she appeared. Runs in the family because Jonathon Ross has the same effect on me now.

      Re: 30 Years Ago Today

First wife and her mother plus most females I knew all said these words or similar just before Maggie was voted in..

"That's what the country needs , a woman in charge to sort things out"

When challenged a few years later while the Iron Maiden was decimating industry and their husbands facing a lifetime on the dole they all flatly denied saying any such thing

        5th May 1980

Saw the SAS storming the Iranian Embassy in London to end the siege that had gone on there for a number of days.

They even took the snooker off the tv so you could watch it live.

I remember watching awestruck as men in black abseiled from helicopters onto the roof of the building and then abseiled down the building smashing there way through the windows with explosions and smoke.

The sas action that evening spawned the film Who Dares Wins starring Lewis Collins.

One of the most amazing things I've ever seen live on tv. How they managed to go in, get the hostages out alive and kill the gunmen in such confusion and so quickly still stuns me. Absolutely incredible!

I remember seeing a really good documentary about it a few years ago, all the floor plans of ever embassy are on file so the SAS had time to learn the layout of each room.

Bit of a dull day unless you're Scottish.

The first Scottish Parliament for 300 years was elected

Not quite the 70's but near enough.

The Kray twins and their brother Charlie were arrested after dawn raids by police in London

been out all day, at the memorial....just got back:

11th May 1985 fire at Bradford City football club

54 Bradford fans and 2 Lincoln City fans died on that awful day

Makes me cry every time I read the 'roll call' of those who died....couples young & old, dads & their sons, and - worst of all - grandad, two sons, grandson, 3 generations gone :cry:

                          RIP
