Hi everyone
This is my first post on this fascinating forum. I have enjoyed reading many of the threads and it has brought back a lot of wonderful memories. I was born in 1966 and have a treasure trove of memories of British children’s TV in the 70s and 80s. Plus I still have many books and annuals from the time (must scan a few and post them here). But I was hoping someone could help me identify a programme from one of my earliest childhood memories. I’ve searched the web for ages but with no luck!
This programme must have been shown in the early 70s. It might have been Play Away, Pipkins or Play School or something like that. It wasn’t the whole show, just a section where the presenter would say something like “Let’s see what’s been going on in the playground”. The camera would cut to a small outdoor playground with swings, a slide and a roundabout. The playground was circular and on a hill, so you could see buildings in the background (possibly London – Primrose Hill??).
It was not a cartoon but stop-animation. There was an elephant (possibly pink – hope I’m not hallucinating here!). And also a large block in the style of a children’s ABC block. This block would slowly move around the playground, rolling forward to a tune I can still remember as clearly as the wonderful music from Robinson Crusoe, White Horses and the Double Deckers. It’s difficult to express the tune here but I’ll have a go – de dom de dom, de dom de dom, de dom de diddle diddle dom de dom. The block used to fall flat onto its next face with each beat of the music.
Can anyone remember this, shed any light on it or perhaps even supply a photo??
