  • Spirit of the 70s

Hello all. Although born in the 60s, the 70s were really my golden age of childhood. As my username suggests, Airfix played a huge part in my schoolboy life. Not only the kits but also the catalogues, which I used to sneak into school and study far more carefully than my school work!

I was also a Lego boy...that was back in the days when Lego was still a construction toy...we did have a motor and a few gears but nothing like the ready-built complexity it has now become.

Someone's avatar here is a can of Top Deck which made some very happy memories of sunny days come flooding back. We used to drink the Shandy and Lager and Lime and think ourselves so grown up! The cans were much thicker then too...and the tops could be removed and made into very effective flicking projectiles!

Well I could wax lyrical all day and fill up the whole forum so I'd better stop here. Greetings to all and happy memories.

    John

Welcome! Relatively new here myself, and I too miss the days when you could fire the pull-ring from a Coke can!

I used to do airfix too,but was often too lazy to paint them.I was more into betta builda than lego. This happened to be owned by the airfix company. It was more introcut than lego and had slates window frames doors etc.It dissappeared years back possibly either due to health and safety (small parts)or competition from lego?

Ha - it's the Top Deck guy! Hello there. Yep we had Betta Bilda too but the bricks didn't seem to fit as securely as Lego. At least ours didn't.

Welcome to the forum, airfix. I too fall into 'the 70s were my golden age' catagory. Look forward to reading your posts.

Hi Airfix guy Betta Builda is extreemly rare now( I noticed small amounts on ebay) i am sure i might have some remaining bits back at my mums house.Being they were smaller in size meant you could have fun building then destroying what you built. For the houses you had a rectangular base to build on.I found lego a bit chunky for my liking.

Hello Airfix Guy, nice to meet you!! I was also a Lego enthusiast but only ever had Sticklebricks, alas! Also loved Top Deck Lager & Lime and Shandy, thought I was being sophisticated and cool. 70's was a great time to be a kid, but I "grew up" (ie spent my teens and turned 18) in the 1980's, which for me was the best era of all. Although not so happy and carefree!!!
                  Looking forward to swapping notes!

                        Hello and welcome John

My only memories of Lego are the torrents of expletives my mother came out with whenever she found a stray brick with her bare feet

That reminds me of the time I removed the steering wheel from my Action Man jeep, & left it with the column pointing upwards.

The next morning my Dad complained that he trod on it & nearly had a hole poked in his foot!
