  • Chavs in the 80s/90s

I know this like a general chat board but I think Chavs had a meaning (that became over-hyped by the 90s) and that the term stood for style in the 80s ...... in a different name if nothing else!

I know I was always proud of my style in my earlier-life and still am ..., be it wearing Sportswear casualy in the day, wearing a Ben Sherman Shirt and smart Shoes/Trousers to a Club at night. I just feel a lot of us (par those who were punk rockers had Chav-ness in them and may-be still do in a way). What do other members think?, it'd be be cool to have any replies regards say Chavs now or in Yesteryear

Please don't tell me you've never seen Made in Britain.
In the early '80s we had the neo-nazi boot/bovver boy' skinheads.

I remember scallys around a lot in the 1990s, normally in shellsuits or the Proto-Ali G American sportwear look with puffer jackets.

I can't remember seeing what I would class as a chav until the late 90's, although they must have been around in some shape or form before then. I fear I might have been a bit chavvy myself in the early 90's - I was fond of cheap gold jewellery, wore my shell suit top as my normal jacket, liked big trainers and yearned for a wet look perm...but so did most of my friends. I'm not sure if it was an age thing, a style thing, or if I was looked upon as a chav by others outside of my school/friend microcosm at that time.

there is nothing wrong in that you dressed as this I think though Trickyvee. To me it's just the press that jump on the bandwagon and thing's get out of context then ...

Blame the newspapers. It was rthem that were mostly responsible for the video nasties scare of the early middle 90s).

There was also the video nasty scare in the early 1980s &, the film nasty scare in the early 1970s, (about the time A Clockwork Orange, The Exocist, Straw Dogs were out).

More recently there were 1 or 2 scares about violent computer games.

Also almost every thing Mary Whitehouse complained about, which almost need a seperate thread.

Things that got banned is actually a really good idea for a thread.
