On a similar theme, two distinguished British actors played a homosexual couple in a film around the same time as Sister George was made. one was married to possibly the most famous actress in the world at the time. The other was knighted by HM The Queen. Who were they?

Corale Brown yes. The deliteful Beryl Reid was in EMS. Can not see her playing a lesbian role somehow.
The film was The Killing of Sister George. Reid played a TV soap opera actress who is very insecure about her future on the show. Susannah York was her lesbian lover and Coral Brown played a TV executive with designs on York. There is a controversial sex scene between York and Brown that is often censored or excised from TV screenings. The film is noteworthy as being the first to shoot some scenes in an actual lesbian night club, and many of the extras in those scenes were actual patrons of the club. It is a film well worth seeing if you can for some great performances.
No, not Jackson. The actress who played the TV soap star was also in Entertaining Mr Sloane. Co-starring was Mrs Vincent Price, a superb actress who I believe hailed from your neck of the woods, Donald.
