  • Bum bag

EVERYONE had a bum bag in the 80s - and some people still do (Sarah Jessica Parker in character as Carrie in Sex And The City has been known to rock one, and all round the world American holidaymakers will list the bumbag, or fanny pack as they rather bizarrely call it, it as their number-one holiday essential. Highly functional and with a neverending range of colours on offer, you could ever get one to match your shellsuit, leaving your hands wallet-free so you could rave till you dropped. It wrapped round your waist and clipped together so you could deposit all your belongings - your spare change, keys and maybe some spare shoulderpads or Deely Boppers at a push - into the pouch which was worn either at your front or back. The only problem was you had to be careful not to overload it, and running for the bus with it on could have led to personal injuries for male wearers. Ouch!

    Re: Bum bag

My sisters had several of these things but never owned one myself.I don't think any of my mates had them either, but several lady friends did near the tail end of the 80's and early part of the 90's.Can't really see point in them for a fella.A few keys and a bit of spare change for the pub is all that I ever had in my pockets.

Only ever wore one once in the 90's, that was the first time I went aboard, quite handy for your passport, loose change and keys etc.

I've still got one, but luckily the strap clip had broken so I can't wear it. For many years I used to use it for holding a personal stereo.

              Re: Bum bag

I still have one and use it when I am abroad. Somehow I feel more secure carrying my worldly belongings in the bum bag rather than in a shoulder bag, which I am convinced would be whipped away by some slick fingered foreigner. I do try to keep it hidden under clothes though. I've used it riding the bike a few times too, worn the bum way i.e. at the back.

I sometimes still use one these days at races for carrying my keys, phone etc when running or when bike riding like Tricky.
