'The Living Years' by Mike and the Mechanics relates Michael Rutherford's relationship with his deceased father and how he never got the chance to say all the things he wanted to say to his father. Co written with B A Robertson who had also recently lost his father.

that happend about 1982 in london, then the boomtown rats did the song about 3 years later
According to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report at georgia state university's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California on 29 January 1979. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays; this livens up the day."
The song was first performed less than a month later. It was released on 21 July 1979

            Hi Fellow Scally/Chav,
Yeah I agree Maddona ruined American Pie and re-wrote quite a lot of it's history as a song to nearly re-turn it into another song entirley un-known from Don's version, but i'm not going to call/diss Maddona too much as she is one of my all time fave singers. I think it is fair to say her version has grown on me over the 11 years since it's realise (and that it sure is different)!

Yeah, this was an amazing song - the lyrics are amzing beyond words as even the non-musical instrumentals too.I also like Russell Watson and James Last's excellent versions too as well. Anyone who has heard Last's version will know what I mean (as he holds such an amazingly high note at one point in the song). I searched for year's to find this version on CD, as well as having it on tape and luckily my frutation struck gold regards it recently!
