In a Nutshell when the Jackson 5 wanted to leave Motown they had a dispute over the rights to the name Jackson 5.

Also Jermaine stayed at Motown because he was married to boss Berry Gordy's daughter at the time.

To replace Jermaine younger brother Randy was brought into the band playing bongos as well as singinf, & someone else (can't remember their name!) to play bass.
