A band that bucked that trend though was Genesis.
Trespass - their second album, was orders of magnitude better than the instantly forgettable From Genesis to Revelation.

Sometimes some acts take a while to record their first album as they aren't used to working in a recording studio, so by the time they release their first album they have evolved musically & their second album is better as they are more used to recording. This is certainly true of Queen, who managed to release their first 3 albums in just over a year.The Trickster On The Roof
