If you're old enough you'll know what I'm on about. Please tell me I'm not the only one who did this...and no I'm not old enough for 78s to come into it!

I used to do this a bit, my friend had his own record player & we used play some LP's at 45 rpm. Queen's Bicycle Race was one song we used to do this to a lot.

Year later I found that Space's Magic Fly seemed to sound better at 45 rpm, & Ennio Morrocone's Come Maddalena (b-side to Chi Mai) seemed more moody & atmospheric at 33 rpm.

Billy's Joel's first album was accidently recorded at the wrong speed, which lead to him sounding like he was breathing helium whilst singing it. No-one noticed until a lot were pressed up & sent to shops.

The later editions had this corrected.

Me too. My mate had a radiogram that you could play at 78. Just sounded silly though.

Did that as well with my mum's Bruce Springsteen albums.
Oh, and n3llyo, I've got the album, not the single of the song you mentioned. I'll have to try it at some point.
To quote Peter Kay in one of his books: It's like making Simon & Garfunkel sound like Pinky & Perky.

Playing records at the wrong speeds was a great way to spend an hour when you were bored, in my day

ALL the time - I found ELO particularly good at 45 speed!

I used to do this all the time Many an afternoon was spent giggling like a fool with friends back in the late 70s/early 80s! In fact I had never heard Chanson D'amour by The Manhattan Transfer at the correct speed until about ten years ago and always thought it was supposed to sound like Pinky & Perky. LOL

                          Re: Playing 33s at 45

I had some Disney compilations, and a couple of the tracks were sung in a speeded-up voice. I would play these tracks at the 16 speed (on my old Dansette), so I could get some idea of what the vocalists sounded like before they were speeded up.

Something interesting I've read about the 16 RPM speed: Apparently, it was intended for "talking book" records, and because they played at such a slow speed, they would have a very long playing time, which you would need if you were trying to get a lot of book onto as small an amount of vinyl as possible. The audio quality wouldn't be good enough for music, but adequate for voice recordings. The idea never caught on, but obviously record player manufacturers once thought it might, hence the inclusion of the 16 speed on many of the old players.
