Backward Masking

Backward masking, back-masking, or whatever you wanna call it, is a technique supposedly used to record backward messages in certain types of music which glorify drug abuse, Satanism or even suicide.

Does this actually happen, or is it just an urban myth?

The Pink Floyd album Meddle (1971) has a track on it called 'One of These Days' which is completely instrumental apart from a small recorded message. This message supposedly says 'One of these days, I'm going to cut you into little pieces' in a distorted, low voice.

However, I know otherwise. That isn't really what it says, that is only what it seems to sound like. I actually used to have an electronic organ with a microphone on it for recording things and playing them backward, and I tried it with this message. I can tell you what the message really says is 'You've recently gone too far Syd, it's enough'. The 'Syd' they were referring to was Syd Barrett, who left the group after becoming too badly affected by drug addiction. The message was a warning to him to give up drugs.

I remember Judas Priest being taken to court over supposed backward messages in their songs telling their fans to kill themselves.

The outlandish haircuts, make-up or dress of many rock or pop stars is enough for some to conclude that they have sold their soul to the Devil to become famous. Take Phil Oakey of The Human League as an example.
Their song 'Being Boiled' says 'Listen to the voice of Bhudda' quite clearly when played forward but is actually believed to say 'Listen to the voice of Lucifer' when played backward.

If you play 'When Will I See You Again' by the Three Degrees backwards, it says 'oooh, April Moons, leave too soon' and another section that says 'Louise hurt him'.

I know this because it was on a cassette tape I owned that got accidentally magnetised, and the sides 'swapped over' but with all the music backwards. 'Fields of Gold' by Sting was also on this tape I remember, but I couldn't make anything from that. Crafty man that Sting, hiding his backwards messages... ;-)
