  • Instrumental Music in Fawlty Towers

In the Fawlty Towers episode "Communication Problems", Joan Sanderson's character complains that the radio in her room doesn't work, but Basil switches it on and we hear a piece of instrumental music which I rather like. I wonder if this is just a piece of music composed especially for that scene or if its BBC library music, the audio equivalent of stock footage? I'd like to hear the full length of that piece of music.

I've got the feeling it's a bit of library music, the sort used for test cards or Pages From Ceefax.

I think you'll find that it's "Leisure Complex" by Dave Gold and Gordon Rees.

BTW Isn't it scary how much Sandi Toksvig looks like Joan Saunders these days .........

Lol that really is ceefax-type music. I've always thought about the people who compose library music. They never get recognition for their often catchy little tunes.

Well Tricky, as far as the mainstream goes, yes, these music legends are generally ignored.
However, within the underground scene, library royalty such as Keith Mansfield, Alan Tew, Alan Hawkshaw, Johnny Pearson, Alan Parker (strangely a lot of Alans in library music), John Cameron, Alan Moorhouse (see !), Brian Bennett, e.t.c. are generally treated as the legendary figures that they deserve to be respected as.
I have been collecting library LPs for many a year, & some of my all time fave tracks are from the many music libraries.
In fact I did a bit of library session work myself in the 90s, but it was pretty bad to be honest.
When I started collecting, library LPs were ridiculously cheap, nobody wanted them.
But in 2014 they go for crazy amounts of money, suffice to say, LPs that I got 20 years back for pennies now go for £80-100+, especially some of the KPM ones.
Check out this vid from a couple of years back of many former library artists, as the KPM Allstars, doing a tune that most members of this site will love.

I've got all the APM-type music they used in Ren and Stimpy, plus lots of KPM, Bruton, De Wolfe production music as well.

Chicken Man is a perfect example of a great library tune. Obviously Grange Hill but before that wasn't it used for Give Us A Clue?

It's interesting what stock music has been used for themes over the year.

I remember an American programme about roller coasters which used the Granstand theme, with Vincent Pryce as narrator.
