What vinyl did you buy 33,45,or78

When I was 16 I bought my first 33 album The Beatles double red Album.

I used to buy singles what was in the top of the charts (45)

We did have 78s in the house where they came from I havent the foggiest all I remember was the dog and the gramophone logo

7 and 12" singles mainly (still do!) made the mistake of buying a 'Top Of The Pops' LP once and thought 'hmm this doesn't sound right' - COVER VERSIONS!

      12" 33's & 45's and 7" 45's

But here is a question for all you record boffins out there:

On your standard record player you had 78rpm, 45rpm, 33rpm AND 16rpm speeds.

What was the 16rpm for? I have never seen a 16rpm record anywhere.

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

IRRC 16rpm was for LPs of speeches, but not that many were produced.

i never bought any recoeds as a kid back in the eighties but the parents had loads ones like val doonican.

think they where the biggest records u could have.

our record player was by the living room window i can still picture it now.

ive only recently in the last few yrs started buying records of various sizes.

some i doubt any of you know they are more movie soundtracks.
                    and very obscure stuff.

                        Re: Records

Mostly 33 and 45 rpm which was being sold when I was buying music in my teens sometime in the long past distant 80's. I did buy a few 78rpm when I joined a rock and roll club back in the mid-late 80's.Always amazed me at how fast they spun round. Half expecting one to take off. Might explain a few UFO sightings back in the 50's being described as disc shaped
Being serious as a young teenager before I left school people were always giving me their old records. Most like brass band etc. were fairly dumped, others like piles of the Top Of The Pops records were ok. Some of the covers were really good, but many got you clenching your teeth. My next door neighbor gave me a Beatles album which was ok and several Abba albums which were something magical although back then as a lad you did not mention you liked Abba. More then your life was worth to do so. I was given a cheap Walkman look alike when I was about 14 so I moved into tapes for a few years until I wore out the Walkman thingy.

Anyway when I was in my teens I would tape off Radio 1 The Chart Show trying to hit the stop button before the DJ started talking and record as soon as he stopped talking on the opening of the song

I was never brave enough to do that, so I still have some tapes of Tommy Vance & Bruno Brookes linking each song, which I transferred onto my computer a few years ago.
