The Bard was misspelt after so many centuries; it got to number one in late February 1992 for eight weeks and after I saw an old edition of Stars in their Eyes on Challenge a few years ago, I had to go onto YouTube and revisit my memory of it once more. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtqbj7kIdsk
Two years later, the song may have got to number one in the charts, but from a Stars in their Eyes perspective, it got to number five - it was the fifth song to be performed in order on the fifth edition of their series and that was also the fifth series of the show in June 1994. Host Matthew Kelly, dressed like a Butlins' Redcoat with clown-alike yellow handkerchief in his breast pocket, introduces the two performing guests as the "sisters" of the misspelt author.
We get to meet (no oun intended) female performers Emma Whitney and Julie Richards; two barmaids working at The Butchers' Arms in Shropshire (hence the "no pun intended" remark) in the same pub part-time at weekends (presumably when Stars in their Eyes was actually on), and look as they are real-life sisters, but they are friends. Julie was 19, dark-haired and a full-time student, studying for her National Diploma in business and finance, and would like to join the police force (which made me wonder how she managed to make time for barmaid work if she was indeed "full-time"). While Emma was 21, blonde and dental surgery assistant by day, working in schools and disabled people. They collect empty glasses and used ashtrays (in those days when smoking wasn't completely banned in pubs). And they both had been singing for a long time. During their small talk with Matthew Kelly, Emma admits that she's the dominant person of the two, and Julie had dreamt the whole idea of appearing on the show up. Then we get to the "Tonight, Matthew, I am going to be..."
They come out of the doors like Goths just like their real-life counterparts - and this is what was fascinating about the performance: the fact that three of them were there, two females doing the song, and one male who had no lines for he seemed to be having a lie down, and was probably enjoying the two unknown females singing to him (I have wondered what the man actually thought about this - I know that the sheer excitement of my response would be how I would feel if it was me). I do like the black Goth dress with the white "dog collar" design on the front. It's a pity that they were not winners of that edition. It feels so sexy; the fact that the man was outnumbered by the performers and they were the only ones who were performing.
Give me this Stars in their Eyes performance against any Top of the Pops show of the real thing any time.
