There was a great documentary recently on "yacht rock" which was originally dismissed as shallow and too clean, but has since been re-evaluated as well crafted music. Bands like Steely Dan, Toto etc.

My Dad liked a lot of 1970s-80s soft rock that could be classed as yacht rock. Steely Dan seemed to get a reputation for being quality music by the early 1990s, with their songs being regularly played by late nigh DJs wanting to sound like musos. Van Morrison received similar treatment even though he way help in high regard.
