  • Songs you didn’t understand as a kid but definitely do now…

It’s slightly concerning how many songs we were happily singing along to as children, without the faintest idea what they were actually about.

I spent years thinking “Every Breath You Take” was a nice, romantic song… turns out it’s essentially about stalking.

Also assumed “Summer of ’69” was just a bloke reminiscing about a particular year. Bit naive in hindsight.

And somehow “Relax” was just a catchy tune on the radio that nobody thought to question.

Makes you wonder what else completely went over our heads at the time.

What songs did you only properly understand years later?

I didn't realise The Green Green Grass Of Home was about a prisoner waiting to be executed for many years, similarly with Gotta Get A Message To You.

This One Goes Out, aka The One I Love, by REM is not a love song - it is about how the singer thinks of his partner as just " a prop to occupy my time", nothing more.
Time flies like the wind, fruit flies like bananas - go figure!

I never realised that either until a few years ago.
The Green Green Grass Of Home was essential a dream of a prisoner who was on death row. He woke up and realised it was his last day alive.

Gotta Get A Message To You was about a prisoner trying to get a message to his wife through the prison chaplain to inform her was going to be executed.
