  • Misheard lyrics

I thought it might be fun to start a thread about misheard lyrics—those moments when you’ve confidently sung along to a song for years, only to find out you’ve been completely wrong

    I’ll kick things off:

When I was 8 or 9, I thought that in the chorus of the song ‘Sit Down’ by James, they were actually singing “Oh Sadam, Oh Sadam” instead of “Oh sir down, Oh sit down”. This was in reference to Sadam Hussain, as I was aware of Gulf War at that tender age. I thought they wrote a song about him.

For years, my dad got the lyrics wrong to ‘Headlong’ by Queen. He kept singing “Get your rushing hands off” instead of “And your rushing Headlong”. It annoyed me so much.

Would love to hear yours—especially the ones you were convinced were right for years.

Bonus points if it completely changed the meaning of the song

I used to think a line in the Prisoner Cell Block H theme was "but the sun and rain and Christmas too" - the actual line was "but the sun amnd rain are prisoners too".

Sister sledge lost in music has a line “ and play for the president” , thought it was”play for the grizzly bears”
and the usual purple haze “scuse me while I kiss this guy “ and the song I’d really love to see you tonight where I hear the line “ I ain’t talking bout the linen”

And to think that they only celebrated Christmas once.

Mondegreens are what misheard song lyrics are called. I have mentioned this before; Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights mentioned "roll and fall in wee" which is what I thought Bush was singing for many years.
