Computer games and their music.

I was just thinking how iomportant is music to a game.

For me music the correct music for the right event in a game can make a massive difference.

i often marvel at just how good game music is and how it makes the player feel and it can really enhance your enjoyment of games.

can members give eamples of game music that enhances their enjoyment of a game/games.

Ok music may not be the number one thing in a game but its high up on my list.
A game with the wrong music can really affet your enjoyment of a game well it does for me.

definitely, music is a must when it comes to helping making games play better, i have alot i can post but i'll start with just a couple.

the boss music from Final Fantasy VII, just awesome

the best them for me in recent years was the Uncharted theme, just gets you pumped for adventure

As mentioned I used to like a lot of music from Commodore 64 games, & downloaded a SID player & a lot of files of music so I could hear them again.

never played much of DKC2 or 3, but i loved the first game, and all the music in it, especially the very tranquil underwater levels

Some of my favourites were Robin of the Wood on the Spectrum 128k, Black Lamp again on the 128K Speccy and Grand Monster Slam on the Amiga. The last one is just so catchy (a sort of medieval stomp) that I downloaded a copy of the theme and use it as my ringtone.

Going back a bit, but I remember the first time I heard the music for Gyroscope on the ZX Spectrum, I thought it was amazing. If I remember correctly it was the first time I heard the spectrum playing what seemed liked more than one line of music at the same time.

The Ocean loading music on the C64 always put me in a good mood, sometimes took the edge off the disappointment of the loaded game

If we are talking more recent, surely the first few Silent Hill games are worth a mention?

My favourite game tunes are from Psycho Hopper(C64), Magical sound shower from Out Run, the Tetris music on the original Game Boy, likewise the music from Nintendo World Cup. The Germanic heavy-metal music in Axelerator and the soundtrack from the original Grand theft Auto. Not to mention all of the themes from Sonic!

I think music was never more important than during the 8-bit era. Back then (especially on home computers as opposed to consoles) the games really weren't that hot. There was often very little actual gameplay duration or variation to these games and the longevity of the game was kept in place simply by making the games unreasonably difficult.

For example, Rambo 2 and Enigma Force were two games I played to death on C64, but never completed. I've since seen walkthru's that completed the entire games in just 4 and 8 minutes respectively). These were short games!

My point being that the music was a key component in keeping you "coming back for more" in what essentially could have been otherwise been very frustrating and psychologically unrewarding pursuit.

Some of the music in the early games fantastic. One composer in particular who springs to mind is the legendary Dave Whittaker. In my opinion he is right up there alongside Rob Hubbard and Ben Daglish. Dave composed the in-game music for the likes of Xenon, Quadralien and Speedball plus many more more across different formats.

One of my personal favourites was the music for Beyond the Ice Palace on the Atari ST.
