Never had physical punishment at home, I think they knew it was pointless. Grounding , keeping me in was enough and they knew it worked, a damn good talking to aswell. At school I got the sandshoe once and the teacher apologised, knew it wouldn't have any effect (and it didn't) but he explained that I'd committed the same offence as someone else who was treat that way so I had to have the same, literally within minutes of each other, which does make sense.

sandshoe whats that a sandal.

i never really got grounded.

Well I expect Richard may be alluding to me as one of the grouches, but I can be grouchy.

By my school days the ruler over the knuckles was all by over, but my late Father certainly recalled it. He said it really hurt! He grit his teeth when he described it, but he did mention that in his day his most strict teacher, used to use the edge of the meter rule to do it!

Mind you, then my Dad would laugh and say he did deserve it for being a clown in class....lol.

I think disciplining a kid in moderation i.e. a smack or two is okay to stop them misbehaving and showing 'who's boss' but full blown, prolonged or unprovoked beating with fists or objects like a belt is abuse. However, if I were a parent and a teenaged son of mine tried to belt me with fists then I'd certainly square up and teach him whos boss. But thats all hypothetical. However, it was the way I was brought up too and my parents and their parents etc.

I think a lot of parents today fear their kids than the other way around...shame really - respect for others should begin in the home with your parents.

I don't want to start a flame war or anything but I've noticed a few people here (naming no names) who seem fine until discussing anything non-nostalgic, when they sound grouchier than the average Daily Mail staffer. It makes my Dad today seem like John Lennon at the end of the 1960's in comparrison.

What people were you thinking of Richard? Your post is not really clear in what you are alluding to.... I'm not sure whether I should be agreeing with you or telling you off lol !

darren, I've always loved your posts but my jaw dropped at this one. I work in a primary school. I feel appalled.

I don't want to start a flame war or anything but I've noticed a few people here (naming no names) who seem fine until discussing anything non-nostalgic, when they sound grouchier than the average Daily Mail staffer. Hi MB mate.

He always basically dragged me to the front of the room by the ear twisting it.
i think he picked on me because he knew my dad.
i did think it going a bit far.
i can still feel the pain as i type this mate.

this teacher also threw feather dusters and pupils and it hit us.
this was in P6 i think.
Did not feel like a feather duster when it hit you.

...its madness not being able to smack your kids if they deserve it....its not as if you are going to break there nose or something...This goverment has went well overboard with you cant touch your kids or you will face some sort of punishment SF...I think most kids realise looking back if they got a slap they deserved it...if parents cant discipline there kids what will this country come to.

even in schools the teachers have no power.
My brother is a teacher and he says he cant as much as raise his voice or he could be in bother...when i was at school if i was bad my primary school teacher grabbed you by the ear and pulled you to the front of the class...do you remember the ruler over the knuckles SF.

My parents gave me the odd clout, Dad's were far rarer and few and far between but hurt like mad. Mum used to use a feather duster - the cane end...and it hurt. Usually for being naughty. By about 16 or 17 it stopped. Massive arguements continued and then the classic 'parents not speaking to me for days' thing....

I think on the whole in hindsight many a time I deserved it.

Didn't do me any harm as they say. As for this new thing of not clouting your kids for fear of abuse? Well, look at society now! If I ever have kids, they'll learn whose boss - there's no way in hell a kids going to teach me whats what or get away with anything. If more parents these days were brave enough to think like that again we'd put youths back on an even keel I say. I saw that BBC2 programme 'My child the rioter' or whatever it was about kids who'd actually been in the riots last year, their motivations etc and what their own parents had to say....There was one 19 yr old elephant of a lad whose father was so nice, so liberal, so understanding and trying to be so helpful that the brat came across as a petulant, lazy, moody good for nothing. His excuse was that if he'd been directed into an acting school which was what he wanted 'I wouldn't have rioted'....His Father then said okay, lets do that then! Do you want to do that? The brat then slowly said yes....if he were mine...God help him.

The two 15 yr olds and the French lads....that is funny.

At home I could be a terror but was never sent to my room because it had no effect. I would quite happily sit in my room and entertain myself. I did get smacked though, but I don't think I'm worse off for it. Usually shouting was enough, and the threat of "wait until your dad gets home!" worked wonders.

I only remember getting smacked once at nursery school. After that I became a bit of a goody goody and didn't step out of line. If I did it was the usual cry of "TRICKY, I'M SURPRISED AT YOU!" and that was enough to shame me into behaving. I had a sickeningly perfect reputation to keep lol.

could never uinderstand beingsent to room as a form of discipline myself.
After all you had things in your room you playted with.

I had things taken away from me that i liked playing with as a form of discipline it did not happen much but it had the desired effect.

although not all kids are bad nowadays.

i got smacked as well but it did me no harm after all it was done only if we deserved it.

nowadawys you cant even be smacked or its abuse.

At home, it varied depending on age and offence; I remember a few spankings, most of which I thoroughly deserved! Forfeiting pocket money or treats, early bed, etc. Lectures didn't work very well, just made me resentful at first, then I mastered the teenager's art of tuning it out. Sometimes I'd listen for the wrong reason - I would make mental bets with myself how long my mum would continue, or which tactic she would try next

At school, I don't recall lines or detention being handed out very often. Usually the threat of being sent to the headmistress (who bore an uncanny resemblance, in looks and personality, to Cruella deVille) was enough. Being pointed out as An Example in assembly could be pretty devastating, especially as it was a small school, so everyone knew who you were. One girl was suspended for shaving her head. On a school trip to France, two 15 year olds from my year were caught having sex with a couple of local boys. They were sent home immediately, and expelled.

One of the teachers once told me that she was giving me a bad end-of-term report, for an "attitude problem", but I talked to her about it, and she decided she had misjudged me, and changed the report. I was quite impressed that she was willing to admit that she had made a mistake.

teacher admitting she made a mistake very strange.

mu primary school was strict but not over the top strict.
secondary school there was no discipline at all.

at home there where riles and if u broke them u got a clout roun
got a few smacks in my time.
never did any harm.

ridiculous who u cannot smack children these days for fear of it being called abuse.
so any members smack there jids.d the ear.

At home a few spankings at an early age worked wonders. You soon learned how far to push mum & dad never had or gave my parents major grief after the age of 8 or so.
At school in the 60's and early 70's discipline was king. The "belt" ( taw, strap ad your local name) was common place. Most times I would say warrented however some teachers took delight in seeing a pupil cry. One metalwork teacher kept his over his shoulder for ease of use over your fingers for holidng a hacksaw the wrong way!!! Another one armed teacher employed this run and jump technique to keep his balance in the swing. You never raised a cheep in those classes. Hard but fair I would say totally the opposite of todays indiscipline in schools!
