Re: Carry On, Carry On's
My favourite is Carry On Again Doctor - I was delighted back in 1996 when I visited WHSmith in Leicester and found that they were selling that video under the Cinema Club brand for just £4.99.
As I have said before, my favourite scene was when Jimmy Nookey (Jim Dale) fuses the x-ray machine and puts the hospital into chaos. And also the Valerie Leon character (Deirdre?) in his office as well - I almost ruined my video copy by pausing it on the "right moment" so many times to have a good look at what I wanted to see - if you know what I mean.

Re: Carry On, Carry On's
I watched Carry on Camping a week or so ago. What struck me about this 1969 film is just how more daring and risque it was compared to entries in the series from just a few years previously. I suppose it reflects the general relaxation in film censorship that was happening at the time. Also, Sid James character is now fully transformed into what we usually associate with the series, as opposed to the authority or quasi-authority figure he played in earlier films: police officer, taxi company owner, ship's captain.

He was an intelligent man and spent time between takes reading quite erudite books. Learning to say his lines in swahili was certainly going that extra mile, but typical of what I have read about him. He passed away at a far too young age.

Also, the film was to be Carry on Tarzan, but the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs held copyright on the name Tarzan, so it could not be used.
In Doctor, Kenneth Williams played Dr Tinkle, while in Jungle, Frankie Howard played Professor Tinkle--are they supposed to be related? Probably not, but interesting.

Re: Carry On, Carry On's
Not sure if this is true, but I read that in Carry on Doctor, Kenneth Williams originally turned down the role of Dr Tinkle in favour of playing Francis Bigger, but finding he didn't like it, went back to playing Dr Tinkle. This puzzles me as the script is clearly written with Frankie Howard in mind for playing Bigger--just listen to it and it's hard to imagine Bigger's lines being said by Williams.

I like her accent in Behind.Originally posted by staffslad View PostI thought Sommer was really good in Carry on Behind. A shame she didn't make more Carry Ons. I think the salary Phil Silvers got for Follow that Camel was also a bone of contention for the regulars.

As I mentioned before he annoyed Kenneth Williams & some of the more "professional" actors by reading his lines off idiot boards, but made an effort to learn them after hearing the complaints.Originally posted by Donald the Great View PostSilvers spoilt Camel.. evidently he was only cast as Rogers wanted to break into the American market.

Yes, that is my understanding as well. I liked Silvers as Bilko, but I am not keen on him as Sgt Knocker in Follow that Camel.

Reportedly, actress Elke Sommer's salary was UK £30,000 which was around six times more than series anchors Sid James or Kenneth Williams ever was. No doubt Sid and Kenneth were a not all too pleased.

Re: Carry On, Carry On's
Mention of the chimp on the Carry On quiz thread reminded me that it threw a tantrum during filming of Carry on Regardless, causing damage to the set, and it took its handlers an hour to calm it down.

Re: Carry On, Carry On's
At Your Convenience was often known as "Carry On Round the Bend" outside the UK but this alternate title still functioned as a tagline on British movie posters for the picture by saying "The CARRY ON team carries on round the bend!".
Joan Sims's first day on the set was 29 March 1971. In her autobiography she explains that she was not keen on this film. No reason why.

I read somewhere that prior to becoming a prolific and successful author, Laurence James worked in Foyle's bookshop, where he would save the latest crime books when they came in on friday's for Sid James to pick up.
