Re: video nasties
The gangster film 'Reservoir Dogs' was refused a video certificate for a while in the 1990's as it contained a scene of torture in which a man cuts off a cop's ear and then talks into it.
Some would argue against the condemnation of these sorts of films by organized religion by saying that they are in fact no more violent than the Bible.
Most people probably know there is a man having his ear cut off in the Bible, not to mention a man being sawn asunder and a man throwing a spear through a couple's intimate parts while they are having sex.
However, Christians believe these things are recorded in the Bible merely as historical fact, whilst in the horror/gangster films they are portrayed as entertainment.

Re: video nasties
The Daily Mail had a "Ban The Sadist Videos" campaign in the early 80's. It could have been just a ruse to sell more copies of the newspaper. Two of the early films to be banned were "Driller Killer" and "Death Trap". The latter film was an uncut version of a film that had been released in cinemas with an X-rating. Two other films featured in the campaign, "Zombie Flesh Eaters" and "Eaten Alive" had also been censored and released in cinemas with an X-rating but were released on video uncut. "Driller Killer" is available on video completely uncut now as far as I know and has even been shown on television by the liberal Channel 4.
Actually many of the so-called 'video nasties', including 'Driller Killer' and 'The Exorcist', were released in cinemas in the US with an R-rating, which means they can be shown to a child of any age if accompanied by an adult, as their X-rating was used mainly for soft and hard-core porn films.

Re: video nasties
Strange now that one of the most disturbing films ive seen (Cannibal Holocaust) is available to watch online for free...and uncut.
mad world...if someone said in 1984 "give it 20years and we will be watching this stuff for nowt and infront of big computers" we would never have believed them.
