Re: video nasties
I've heard a about a few different film buffs who have been all excited about seeing a banned film for the first time, only to be disappointed, or the initial thrill quickly wore off after repeated viewings.

Re: video nasties
For the last 25 years or more, I've been gradually trawling my way through the list of VNs. So far, I've found that most them are ****, or just hilarious!!Originally posted by vanhelsing View PostAnybody remember the camapign against horror and violent videos durting the early '80s? A lot of the banned films are now legally available on DVD but some're still banned.

Really ?!?Originally posted by philipdalton View PostI used to know a man who had seen this film on video and was very deeply upset and disturbed by the faked murder scene at the end of it, thinking it to be real.
Those "special" effects are completely pathetic, and the acting is terrible.
It really is one of the phoniest scenes in cinema history, I am blown away by someone actually believing it was real.
I think the guy should stay away from the horror genre completely if he is that gullible.

Re: video nasties
Even though nobody really gets killed in this film it's still revolting and sadistic.Originally posted by myself View PostActually one of the 'video nasties' that was released in US cinemas with an X-Rating in 1976 was 'Snuff'

Re: video nasties
Originally posted by myself "The Daily Mail had a "Ban The Sadist Videos" campaign in the early 80's. It could have been just a ruse to sell more copies of the newspaper. Two of the early films to be banned were "Driller Killer" and "Death Trap". The latter film was an uncut version of a film that had been released in cinemas with an X-rating. Two other films featured in the campaign, "Zombie Flesh Eaters" and "Eaten Alive" had also been censored and released in cinemas with an X-rating but were released on video uncut. "Driller Killer" is available on video completely uncut now as far as I know and has even been shown on television by the liberal Channel 4.
Actually many of the so-called 'video nasties', including 'Driller Killer' and 'The Exorcist', were released in cinemas in the US with an R-rating, which means they can be shown to a child of any age if accompanied by an adult, as their X-rating was used mainly for soft and hard-core porn films."

Re: video nasties
Actually the British Board of Film Censors can ban films on video but they don't have any legal control over what is shown in cinemas. The town council has the final say on what is shown in cinemas in their area. 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' was banned by the BBFC in the 70's for being too sadistic but was passed by the Greater London Council. According to my friend the Regal Cinema in Northwich, Cheshire showed an edited version of the hard-porn film 'Deep Throat' although the film didn't get a mainstream release in the UK.

Re: video nasties
Film censorship in the UK has become somewhat more relaxed now than when VCR's first became popular. Not only have many of the so-called 'nasties' found their way back on the shelves again but also hard-core pornography has been legalized as well, so our censorship is as relaxed now as what it is in the States.
I remember it was on 'John Craven's Newsround' or something like that about the new video censorship law and a whole load of small children were shown describing scenes of violence they had seen in video films. It shocked my father at the time to think that their parents were allowing them to see that sort of thing.
