Harold Lloyd

I remember watching Harold Lloyd on TV in the early 80's. It was on quite regularly and may have been a compilation series of clips from his films. I remember the catchy theme tune "hooray for Harold Lloyd, a pair of glasses and a smile" I think he really appealed to kids with his distinctive glasses and dare devil stunts like hanging off the clock face, which was in the title sequence. Can anybody else remember watching this?

Yes, I seem to remember BBC Two showing it along with Laurel & Hardy, Flash Gordon, King of the Rocket Men (?), Edgar (comedy I think). Used to enjoy watching all of these as a kid and saw it as a bit of a treat when it came on the tele. I suppose they were used as 'fillers' in the same way as the Beeb uses old-tat/cookery programs now...

I remember watching this on BBC2 and it was fantastic. I love watching old silent films, in particular Harold Lloyd and my own favourite, Buster Keaton. Both of these guys were geniuses.

I have never understood why they do not repeat them on TV very often. Silent comedy is great for all generations purely because evyone can watch and laugh at this. I remember watching Harold Loyd with my 5 year old son who was in hysterics at his antics

According to wikipedia, Harold turned into a bit of a grumpy old man who would only allow his films to be aired at a price nobody would pay so they were rarely aired until his death and as a consequence he lost out on the greater popularity enjoyed by Keaton and Laurel and Hardy etc.

These days B&W films even with sound are rare to see on the main channels unless they are classic enough. Until a few years ago it was common to find them on mid afternoon, though there were often complains on the Teletext letters page about their screening being a waste of licence payer's money.

some black and white films are very good,
i watch a lot of them on the freeview channels.

thing is people are complaining not because of the film but because its not in colour.
they probably see its in b and w dont give th film a chance then complain.

It's the old 'too many repeats' issue too. People want new shows for their money but then they churn out all that cheap and over-killed cookery/antiques/home improvement/reality rubbish.

harold lloyd was influenced by another legend charlie chaplin.
lloyd was born April 20, 1893 – died March 8, 1971.
he was an actor and producer most famously known for his comedies.

his main influence was charlie chaplin.

lloyd was born in burchard nebraska.
he died in beverly hills caifornia.

An absolute quality piece of comedy from a true genius. I remeber watching a documentary about this and whilst it looks as if he is very high up, with the way the land lies where it was filmed he is actually only a few feet from the ground. Camera trickery at its best

the thing that always sticks in my mind about harold lloyd (apart from the theme song) is him hanging from the clock high above the city streets in the film 'safety last'.

I remember it being shown on bbc2 after the bbc1 kids programs had finished. I know plenty of kids round my way used to watch it. I wonder what the of kids today would think of Lloyd. My nieces/nephews just take in loads of American trash on the nick channels!
