Sorry, been off site for quite a while. Many thanks, Evil McBad, this sounds like the most promising answer, it ticks all the boxes. Pity it's not on youtube. Was beginning to doubt my own memory lol.

Does this stir any memories for anyone? Thanks.
    It was called 'Wandjina magic'

Quite a few early colour shows only exist in B&W, as they were often copied onto B&W film for export, & the original colour tapes were wiped & reused.

It was in colour, but the version that survived and got reissued by Network DVD was in Black & White for some reason
    It was 1973

The link I provided looked so promising no sign that it was in black and white! Oh well....

It sounds possible, and for some reason the guy on the motorcycle strikes a memory chord, but no one on the link mentions the music, which would clinch it. If I remember rightly, the closing credits featured flames along the bottom half of the screen against a black background on which the titles came up, but I may be confusing this with something else I saw 40-odd years ago :-). Am grateful for your help in solving this.

No, that I remember from tea-time tv: one of the things on tv that really frightened me as a kid.
