    The 70s.
Get It On: 70-72: 1 of 4. Historian Dominic Sandbrook goes back 40 years to present a fresh look at the decade. He begins with the years 1970 to 1972, from the housing boom that led to the creation of new towns, through the arrival of thousands of Ugandan Asians seeking shelter from General Idi Amin, to the 1972 miners strike. Repeated tomorrow at 11.20pm.

    Followed by;
10pm, Sounds of the 70s 2: Art House Glam - Get in the Swing.
A collection of archive performances by artists including The Kinks, Queen, Elton John, Roxy Music, Rod Stewart and David Bowie.

Given the title I'll be very disappointed if Sparks don't get a look in.

My parents came here in 71. I wonder how they found England back then...shame I can't ask them now.

The first programme is 1 of 4. The second one doesn't say so presumably a one off.

                Bah, I feel letdown.
The archives have so much amazing stuff to offer, but all we get are one hour docs.
Where are all the rare programmes ???
Might be alright, but from here it seems like a wasted opportunity.

I know what you mean. The Beeb could've used the whole Easter Weekend to show classic stuff, instead of giving us a few crumbs.

well on breakfast news this morning the fella who directs the show was on.

and he said one very interesting thing that in the seventies idi amin got in contact with the brittish goverment and had huge amounts of bananas ready to ship over because britain was i8n such a bad way food wise.

i guess we will have to wait and see how good it is before we can make a proper oopinion.

I've seen the footage of Amin offering the bananas to the UK....the man was a lunatic, he bled Uganda dry, promised much, became a despot, betrayed his own people who believed in him as a revolutionary and wasted millions on projects that never bore fruition or were built when it wasn't affordable i.e. massive hospitals, he murdered millions of his own people too and the Asians came over here because all the 'white collar' jobs were in their hands, Amin wanted 'Black Ugandans for Ugandan jobs' unfortunately the people weren't educated nor skilled enough to take on the jobs so the country went to pot...He became more of a rogue leader and the country seen as a rogue state when he allowed the Air France jet carrying Jewish hostages to land at Entebbe Airport...the rest of that historic moment as they say, is history...and it put Israel on the map as a country not to be trifled with...

So, the first of the long – awaited 'The 70's' has come and gone...its refreshing for it to be presented by someone, commenting on it all...Its funny, we have to blame Ted Heath for the mess thats the E.U. and Britain being part of it now - many Brits wish we'd jolly well leave it – including me! Its amazing how things like free credit, housing, miners strikes and the disparity of wealth lead to the country we have now...well, thats just a basic surmise...

A fairly good show, but a bit too depressing, I was hoping for something more rose – tinted...

there are still more to go.and it was quite good.

                              The BBC Two Seventies Season

Am currently loving the series on the Seventies that the BBC are showing. Very interesting and fascinating. I never realised there was so much to that decade. I thought it was all flares, sex comedies, dodgy jumbers and package holidays. Loving the soundtrack in the background though.

What I am not happy about is the BBC not showing the other accompanying documentaries on the iplayer. They showed last week a show called TV 73 and I Love The 70s (episode 2) and they are not on iplayer. Not. Bloody. Happy. >

So, we've to blame 1973 onwards for the rising inflation, fuel costs etc for the UK we have today....sad that.
