you created a rant and asked for any thoughts.........does a rant deserve an intelligent response? ............I for one enjoyed the programme and wished it could have been longer........I saw things on the screen that triggered memories from my childhood that would have probably stayed forgotten had I not watched it.

However, you are entitled to your opinon on the series of shows as is Shilton (whose comments in reply to yours have made me laugh ). Anyhow, on the whole I did find some of it interesting and some of it rather uninteresting - the stuff about the rise of the 1970s porn industy was a bit needless and I do agree, I doubt everyone had lots of cash to spare. I think I'm more used to seeing programmes that are a bit more rose - tinted in terms of nostalgia - barring vox pops from the like of Stewart Maconie or Wayne Hemmingway or Katie Puttrick (see the older I Love...series the BBC did for examples ) whom I don't really like as their comments were a bit sarcastic in those shows from 10 years ago. I think one of the best shows about the 1970s was Andrew Marr's History of Britain - he really nailed the mix of politics and social issues in that show when he focused on the 70s. Dominic Sandbrook took a far more 'over analysed' approach comparable to Mark Lawson or Melvyn Bragg...at some points I wasn't really even bothering to pay attention.

I actually like seeing old films from the 70s more - take Richard Burton's 'Villain' from 1971 - were the roads really that empty of traffic back then? Thats something I mused over when I watched it the other night on dvd...The good thing about the show was like Shilton said - seeing old excerpts of days gone by.

Did anyone else around here, waste four hours of their life watching this tosh?!!!
When the BBC commision these 'factual' documentaries full of archive footage, they should employ people / researchers who know their stuff.
Like a lot of historians, Dominic Sandbrook was economical with his facts. Or maybe he was too selective and nostalgic: Anyway according to him, in the early 1970s, many British families had so much money to spare, that they were able to buy houses in Peterborough (of all places!! No disrespect meant to the place on my part, I'll add). Speaking as someone who lived in council housing back then, buying and moving to Peterborough wasn't an option. Even if I wanted to. I know that every historical thing that happened couldn't be depicted in the series, but why didn't he/they feature the BBC's TV strike of 1979 for instance?? That was ignored. But a young Arthur Scargill was concentrated on, so was a group of women going on strike, as if this was the first time it happened in British history, when in fact it happened at Grunwick (Also not mentioned) and in the '60s at Dagenham.

Anyway, that's my rant of the day over. Any thoughts from other people on here?

I agree with you really. Was looking forward to this but found it a bit of a letdown (I stuck with it hoping it would get better).

The presenter was annoying (even the Radio Times seemed to dislike him) and I felt he focused too much on the housing situation and as you say much of it seemed inaccurate anyway!

As sf1378 said, there have been much better 1970s shows made than this. Even worse for me was that I ending up missing the start of '56 Up' on ITV+1 which I'd been looking forward to for weeks

well i must say i enjoyed it a lot.

i did not mind that so much relating to social issues was shown

i guess its just a matter of opinion some of us liked it some of us did not.

I enjoyed it, but they did try to fit too much in a short series, it worked out at 20 mins per year not really enough to cover politics, pop culture and social trends.

Hi Roz, notice your a newbie, so firstly, welcome to DYR. I've been here since 2008, nice place on the whole...I think you've surmised it very well. I didn't much like Dominic Sandbrook either, so it wasn't just me that felt that way - he seemed to have a 'oh I know all there is to know' air about his presenting style...perhaps thats what the BBC were getting at by saying he was annoying.

they should have made it ine hourly episode per year.
why could theynot have done this.

wonder will they do an eighties one.

I actually joined a good while ago but am always in such a rush when I post that it took me weeks to realise there was an 'introduce yourself' thread at the bottom of the page, how dumb!

Getting back to the show, agree with you again, DS came across as being quite smug. The show itself was ok as it goes and well researched, but just didn't float my boat the way I hoped it would.

I enjoyed the show, for what it was, a very condensed, potted history of some of the major happenings, if it was meant to be something more indepth I think they would have gone about things in a different way. As for the presenter, he's Ok, a lot better than some of the others the Beeb employ. There was this woman who made a series for BBC Four on the Medieval times and she was superbly irritating. It wasn't Mary Beard, she's just like an old Auntie who tells you good stories, this other woman was young-ish.
