  • TV series about a young boy in WW2

Can anyone remember a tv series in 80s or 90s about WW2 seen through the eyes of and narrated by a young boy? I think it was set in the East End of London.

Feel sure you are talking about the 70's series 'Sam' here - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159204/

Pretty sure it was repeated later too

All about the Barraclough Family and particularly its youngest member, Sam. This series lasted two years and followed Sam into his Adulthood. Must admit, the earlier years were the ones that made most impression on me too

Thanks, Jaybee. That might be it. As I remember, the young boy (Sam?) had whimsical comments about what was going on.

Probably worth watching, anyway, and if not I'll ask again!

          *lol* No probs !!

There was another series called Carries War - two young evacuees sent to Wales. I really enjoyed this one too - but it was a girl and her younger brother and it was she who did most of the narrations

It was shown as a series in 1974, then remade as a film for TV in 2004.

Yes, I saw the film. Not as good as I remember Sam, though.

Thanks for that. Looks interesting, but I don't think it's the one I'm after. I've searched, I can't see it on sale, in any case.

Doesn't seem to be "SAM" either. From what I can see, SAM was based in the 30'd in Yorkshire, and the one I'm after was based in the 40s in London.

Could it be the Machine Gunners? Not sure where it was set, but it ended near the coast - it was about a group of schoolkids finding a bomber wreck and taking one of the guns from it.

The machine gunners was set in North East England, that was my first thought on this but it doesn't seem to match.
The only thing to look forward to is the past

I've been doing a lot of searching for the answer to this one but not got any fresh suggestions. I'm still looking though.

But just as an interesting bit of trivia,

Kevin Moreton played the title role and seemed set for a decent career. He popped up in two other series that I know of: "Striker" and "Nobody's House", both great series and both previously discussed on these boards I think.

                        Wonder what happened to him?

                        ...Right, back to Google.........

That fits - even as I posted, I was sure that I remembered Northern accents.
