  • Bleak 70s-style German short film on nuclear fallout/radiation

Was just wondering if anyone out there can remember a very bleak 1970s short film about nuclear fallout?

Basically, I think it was a German film that was shown to us British kids, and was played in the early 80s. It was about children who seemed to live in a bunker - which also served as a classroom.

I think it centred around the fact, that for one day a year, the kids could go out and play in the outside world and roll around in the grass, because there may have been some sort of eclipse that blotted out the radiation?

One kid has an argument with a girl and ends up getting locked in the bunker whilst the other children have their special day.

It was very scary, but no one ever remembers it - can anyone help?

    Ta.

This is oddly reminiscent of the Ray Bradbury story- All Summer in a Day
All Summer in a Day (1982) (TV) - Plot summary

However it could possibly be a German version of the same tale that yoy've seen

You were exactly right Danny. It is this Ray Bradbury story. I must've been around five when I watched it - which may be why I thought they were German because of their strange accents!

Oddly Fahrenheit 451 is one of my favourite books (and films) and I've always enjoyed anything with a dystopian theme.

Thanks loads - you've solved one of the great mysteries of my life!
