'The Gammage Cup'. I forget the author but I've always remembered the title and the basic story. I found it really absorbing at whatever age I was, probably around 11, wanted to go live in the book, but I was the same about Heidi and Charlotte's Web!
I should try and find it again. My virtual jigsaws: https://www.jigsawplanet.com/beccabear67/Original-photo-puzzles
