Trainer snobbery started in schools in the early Nineties. I remember kids in school who had cheap no name trainers like Airzone or Gola getting teased about having the wrong trainers. Reebok Pump was the trainer to be seen in back in the early nineties.

Started well before that, mate. I went to secondary school from 1982 to 1988, and I remember the snobbery starting in the mid 80's.

My first pair of branded trainers were Reebok Hexalites(unbelievably comfortable), then I bought a pair of Nike Air Jordans with some Christmas money. They were rubbish and fell apart after just 2 months. Then some toe rag at school stabbed the air pockets with a compass point for a laugh. I then ended up with a pair of Puma Disc system trainers which lasted through my last year of school and into my college days. Then I started wearing Caterpillar(Walking Machines) boots. Those yellow ones with a little picture of a D11 Cat bulldozer on the back of the heel. I bought a pair of Hi Tec Silver Shadow II last year and tend to wear them for knocking about in or riding the bike( a 25 year old Raleigh Activator)

I've heard of Pony. I someone at school had a pair and got ripped to bits about them as everybody was wearing Reebok pump

I remember SPX.
Late 80s/early 90s.
There were around the same time as Troop & Kangaroos.
I had a pair with a fake (I think) air sole.
They did shell suits too !

Anybody remember SPX trainers? A friend (petite female) had this pair and I can still remember her schlepping along the street with feet like ferry boats in these.

I remember going to a party in July 1994 and this lad turned up in "Airzone" trainers, has anybody heard of them? I think they where a really cheap brand of trainer because he was ridiculed about them. I remember him telling me that he could feel peoples eyes drilling into his trainers at the party. That was in 94, i would hate to think what happens to kids today if they turned up in no name trainers.

I remember a brand of trainers called Kangaroos which had a pocket on them, they were a greyish coloured, running type trainer.

i used to love wearing trainers esp adidas runners.......but a few years ago i stopped wearing them.....preferring shoes i guess.........i have trainers in my locker incase i'm called to do PE at school, which isn't very often

In my opinion the greatest trainers ever made are these.
Nike Air Jordan mk5, originally made in 1990.
I got my first pair on Red Nose Day in 1991 for a bargain price, the colours were the ones shown in the pic above.
I've since owned a few other pairs (including some lovely all white ones) and would love some new ones, however, the prices are absolutely ridiculous these days.
But there you go, Air Jordan 5s, My favourite trainers ever.

I remember getting a pair of black trainers with yellow stripes back in the late 70's. I can't believe they would have been a brand name but they were dead comfortable. I wore them out over a few summers. The best trainers I ever had were Dr Marten trainers. I begged and begged for these for my birthday when I found out how much they were and that it would take me years to save up myself. Can't find anything online now but they were light blue suede and very bouncy I think they had white soles.

Ahh, the big tounge style!! I had a pair of troop cobra. They were black, white and had a black&green snake pattern on the sides. Didn't bother with laces cos they had velcro straps! Very cool, honest...

I remember, I had a pair of Walter Payton roos with a velcro pocket in the tounge.
White, orange & navy. Chicago bears colours!

Can someone help us out, my husband keeps going on (and on and on and on) about 2 different pairs of trainers he used to have, one was with a tongue that had a velcro pocket on it.
The other had some kind of ball maze game underneath the trainer itself........any ideas??

Walter Payton roos had a velcro pocket in the tongue!

I had a pair of Voit basketball boots that came from a market stall. The soles fell off them after a few weeks. Must have been crappy knock-offs as my dad had spent 3 months working in the US and said that Voit were one of the quality 'cool' brands there. My folks woulnd never spend money on branded footwear so I then ended up with a pair of white and lime-green ACC boots from Fosters menswear. I wore them for PE at school and the teacher always made us tuck in the tongues of our boots before we were allowed to do any activities!

I can not understand why this would be so with the Tongues Powdered Toast Man. Though at my School - even until Year 9, Plimsolls was still (sadly) fine for PE as the order of the day Lol.
