  • Sardine tin keys

Now, when was the last time you encountered a sardine tin that opened using a key?

I really wanted one when I was a kid so I ended up fruitlessly scouring shops and supermarkets in a quest to find one, then eventually concluded that they are probably no longer in production. How many sardine tin manufacturers are there in the world?

It intrigues me why tins for certain types of food are (or were) opened using a key whereas the majority of tins required a tin opener until the recent proliferation of ring pull lids.

They are so dangerous many times ive been badly cut by them.

        Same with corned beef too.

I never understood the key idea.

I was thinking with tinned meats it was easier to remove the contents from the tin when it's opened in the middle rather than the top.

I encountered a tin of pressed cod roe that opened using a key.
