The Eurovision Song Contest came from the Harrogate Conference Centre, Harrogate, UK on Saturday 19 April.

• The choice of the little-known North Yorkshire town Harrogate as the Eurovision Song Contest venue surprised many; an animated map of Europe with "Where Is Harrogate?" in several languages appeared at the start of the Contest.
• 18 countries took part.
• Greece was going to enter "Sarantapente Kopelies" sung by Themis Adamantidis, but withdrew just two weeks before the Contest.
• France also withdrew following a statement by its national broadcaster TF1 in autumn 1981.
• There were no new or returning countries.
• Germany won with "Ein Bißchen Frieden" sung by Nicole, scoring 161 points. This was their first ever win having previously entered every year since the debut contest in 1956.
• During the reprise, Nicole sang her winning song in German, English, French and Dutch.
• The winning song became a hit all over Europe. The English version "A Little Peace" reached number one on the UK singles chart on 11 May and stayed there two weeks.
• The UK's entry "One Step Further" sung by Bardo, finished 7th with 76 points.
• Finland finished last with nul points: "Nuku Pommiin" sung by Kojo.

The 12th FIFA World Cup, took place in Spain from 13 June to 11 July 1982.

• Out of 109 countries which entered, 24 countries (including hosts Spain and 1978 champions Argentina) qualified for the final tournament.
• The first round consisted of six groups (1,2,3,4,5,6) of four countries each.
• The top two teams from each first round group progressed to the second round: four groups (A,B,C,D) of three countries each.
• Each second round group winner progressed to the semi-finals.
• England made it past the qualifying round for the first time in 20 years (they'd qualified automatically in 1966 and 1970, and failed to qualify in 1974 and 1978).
• During the tournament, England won first round Group 4, and finished second in second round Group B (and thus eliminated at the end of the second round).
• Scotland also qualified, they finished third in first round Group 6 (and thus knocked out at the end of the first round).
• The two semi finals took place in 8 July: Poland v Italy and West Germany v France.
• Italy won the final against West Germany on 11 July (Italy 3–1 West Germany)
• The official mascot was Naranjito, which resembled an orange on legs.

Multi-Coloured Swap Shop finshed for good on 27 March 1982.

Its replacement Saturday Superstore began on BBC1 on Saturday 2 October 1982, and was very similar to Swap Shop. In the first series its presenters were Mike Read, Maggie Philbin, Keith Chegwin and John Craven.

The Late, Late Breakfast Show launched on BBC1 on Saturday 4 September 1982.

• It was presented by Noel Edmonds, and the show was broadcast live each week.
• One of its features including "Give It A Whirl", in which viewers asked to have their names put on the whirly wheel, to have the chance to do a stunt (chosen randomly from a second wheel), in the next show.

After their 1981 Eurovision success, Bucks Fizz had two more number one UK singles in 1982: "Land Of Make Believe" and "My Camera Never Lies"

Oh 1982, the year I grew up. 15yrs old and realising that those I knocked around with weren't doing it for me,leading to a showdown on the night England played Germany in the world cup. A summer dominated by Fame and Dexy's even though I hated both Talk Talk's "Today" and The Stanglers were the sounds of that summer for me. Being allowed to come home from friends when I wanted (last bus 11pm), first real girlfriend fun and fondles and s*** scared in case I was kissing badly etc. Radio Luxembourg and Radio 1's John Peel helped me grow up while my friends were only watching TotP. Then a bloke called Keegan came to my football team.

Tardelli is now assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland. You might see him repeat that celebration this summer at Euro 2012 if Ireland manage to win a game or two.

The shock of 1982 was the launch of the Ford Sierra! A car that replaced the good old Ford Cortina. It stunned the British public back then. Remember the nick names it got? The Jellymold! The Salesmans Space Ship! It was a car that cost Ford dear at the time and i remember stories in the newspapers saying that Ford will bring back the MK5 Cortina as sales of the Sierra where slow in the first 18 months or so.

I did read that some fleet managers panicked when seeing hearing about the Sierra & bulk ordered Cortinas.

My brother's friend's parents bought one not long after the launch & I remember being impressed by the space-age styling of the interior.

My dad always had Cortina's but when the Sierra came along it was Cavaliers from then on. The mk2 Cavalier saved Vauxhall.

I never knew the Sierra was so not liked at the time in 1982, but I think it got to a point where it gained status of being one of Ford's best Car's of this generation. I remember a family member restoring a Red B Reg one that had had serious outside damage done to by virtue of a crash which was restored in about 1989/1990 which I still can recall years later thinking what a "beautiful car" this was at the time. Sadly it has long since entered the Scrapyard of the Sky, but to me it was like riding in a Merc or a Rolls Royce. If only these day's (even since the latter part of the 90s even. Ford made great Cars like the Sierra and Escort/Orion that would be great I feel. I just hope one day Ford have the idea to bring in a modern new Sierra - though I sense it would be like an even more modern Mondeo, which though I like Mondeo's quite a lot , if a new Sierra was ever mad. I think Sierra's somehow I don't know why though that they just was a truly unique car!

The Sierra was a nice looking car. There was a Cosworth version knocking about where I grew up. I never did find out who it belongs to.

Yes i like the Sierra. I really like the last of the line models on a 1992/93 on J&K plate with the colour coded bumpers, black (smoked out) rear tail lights. Yes the Sierra was a shock in 1982 but it still looked good in 1992! (still looks good today).

Nice one Richard ..... a similar thing happened in our house, but a couple of years earlier i.e. 1980.

Sunday evenings were bath nights, so there I was in the bath (aged 11) leaning over the side to press the cassette tape record button, with the wireless stood close by ...... the crackles from the VHF meant the recording was abysmal and it was a miracle that I wasn't electrocuted!!!

I remember taping songs off the radio and the frustration when somebody would walk into the room in the middle of the taping and start talking.

My 2nd world cup finals still remember beating France 3-1, Scotland beating New Zealand 5-2, and Northern Irelands incredible 1-0 win against Spain
