Rock your baby by George McRae reminds me of summer discos in the Stoneleigh Club Porthcawl - awesome time.
In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry takes me back to the summer when I spent quite a few weeks in Broad Haven in Pembrokeshire.
Anything "glammy" reminds me of the Friday Night youth disco at my school - Ynysawdre in Tondu, with teacher Ben Jones on the "Wheels of steel"
T Connection's "Do what you wanna do" puts me back in the Meadow Vale club Tonyrefail with Martin's "Roe In" roadshow.

Hmm, significant 70s songs. I wasn't born till '68, so initially I would like any song to which I could remember the tune, or shock horror, knew the words to (our old valve radio had a loudspeaker that sounded like the singers were singing through a wet tea-towel). A lot of my early musical knowledge was also gained by sitting outside my oldest brother's bedroom when he played his records, so I had a musical education rooted in The Beatles, Wings, The Beach Boys and The Eagles. Still, here's a motley assortment of happy memories:

September - Earth, Wind and Fire
Have You Seen Her - The Chi-Lites
Yes Sir, I Can Boogie - Baccara
          Cool For Cats - Squeeze
Stone In Love With You - The Stylistics
Dancing With The Captain - Paul Nicholas
Jack and Jill - Raydio (I think)
I Believe In Father Christmas - Greg Lake
Hit Me With Your Rhyhm Stick - Ian Dury and The Blockheads

There's loads more, but that's all that I can remember before the rose-coloured spectacles get all steamed up and teary
          Cheers

The Night Chicago Died by Paper Lace. It was the first single I ever bought - I was 8.
The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir.

Re: Defining songs of the 70's

Sorry, I hope i've not done wrong in posting from an old thread - as I did'nt consider it right to start a new one, apologies again too for this if so. Regards the 1970s I think my main 3, which is not as difficult as the 1980s Song's, though still not easy are/would be:

Either; Susi Qautro - Devilgate Drive or Nillson - Without You and/or Annie's Song by the great John Denver (though this is still an amazing echoing haunting type song it means quite a lot as it was cfhoosen for My Uncle's funeral 4/5 years since which I never thought his Family would select for his funeral but represented him so well). I guess through this i'll always now adore this song very much indeed.

Edit: I forgot to add; There is also Blondie/Debroah Harry and Denis and Heart Of Glass and Kate Bush with Wuthering Heights, though i'm unsure if i'm as much of a fan of these as the others i've mentioned.

I suppose it would have to be 'The Hustle' by Van McCoy.

I can not believe how i'm in-advertantly forgot the ledgend that is don MaClean and American Pie, which though I like Maddona's version - she just truly re-wrote and spoiled the history of Don's original version I think.

American Pie has to easily be inmy top 5 song's ever from the 1970s - though I doubt it will ever be truly understood totaly what Don meant by it lyric-wise and word's wise. It's origin's which are so diverse from what i've read etc, still a great song indeed.
