A lot of things by Boney M really take me back to the late 1970s, especially Boat On A River for some reason. They were based in Germany. A lot of groups from Holland will do the same time-trip for me... anyone else remember Mississippi or Smile by Pussycat, In The Summernight and Ding-A-Dong by Teach-In (also Eurovision winners I think), or for the '80s Saulsalito Summer by Diesel and Twilight Zone by Golden Earring?

      DURAN DURAN - RIO
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand, and when she shines she really shows you all she can...
ohh this song brings back some fab happy memories for me, it was in my opinion one of DD's best songs they ever brought out. My guilty pleasure was Roger Taylor who played the drums, by god he was hot!! I think I can remember their names...Simon LeBon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor although none of them were related.
Oh what I'd give to be young and carefree again, but them days are long gone, I'm now a mum of 2 boys, one nearly 21 and the other nearly 13, if i was to start singing anything from DD they'd have no idea who they even were, its all this Grime music and Stormzy, id probably even get the strange look from them if i sang Eminem now too, jeez i feel bloody ancient haha!!

I remember the video for Rio, it really stood out from most; like a mini-movie.

Agree that the syndicated radio stations seem to have the same stuff on a constant loop (looking at you Absolute) and the fact that a lot of the talky bits between tracks are pre recorded slotted in and have no interaction or refeference to the tracks being played

Anything that Smooth radio plays right now. Seems like they only have about 10 songs on their playlist!

Songs used in adverts can become irritating very quickly.
I'm thinking of The Beach Boys Wouldn't It Be Nice and Bobby Darin's Beyond the Sea.
Oh and, it goes without saying, any advert using rap.

Iceland (the frozen food specialists not the Scandinavian country) used Wouldn't it Be Nice in their adverts back in the mid 1980s, and that is what I associate the tune with when I was younger. The Beach Boys even had their songs used in adverts for my favourite brand of tea - Tetley.

One thing about songs used in adverts is the rewording of the lyrics in order to use it for their advertising - I started thread about this subject a few years ago. The Coasters' Yakety-Yak was used in dozens of commercials due to his distinctive tune. And my signature was used to advertise KP Peanuts as well.

You are right - it is maddening, and at least when one hears songs on the radio, (with the exception of Christmas songs in December), it would probably be only once that day, whereas adverts that contain the songs can be heard several times during your evening's viewing. A bit like how Heineken ironically used an old Carpenters song to make people purchase more of the stuff, because they said in the advert: "we'll keep playing this until you buy our stuff". They later said in a future advert that it had worked - people did buy more lager.

I nearly read that as Bobby Davro!

                        Hallo,

I totally get it! Some songs just get overplayed. For me, it's "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. Great song, but it's on repeat everywhere!

Agreed! I'll hear the opening bars of something I like & then hear some talentless nonsense all over it.

Someone recently told me how clever Enimem was because of what he'd added to 'Abrcadabra' by Steve Miller. I said, "That's not a new song and if he were that clever, he'd write his own songs!"

Because I know lots of old obscure stuff, even Rizzlekicks can't fool me by sampling 'Rainbow Chaser' by Nirvana (not that one - there was also a '60s psych/folk/rock band called Nirvana).
