  • Listening to an Album All the Way Through

There has been a news feature about people who, in this age of CD and MP3 shuffles, still believe that certain albums must be listened to all the way through with the songs in the right order:

Are record clubs the new book clubs?

Which albums do you think should be listened to all the way through?

I nominate Rage in Eden by Ultravox. Four of the tracks are segued together so closely that even hardened fans argue about where one stops and another begins, there is a continuous theme throughout the album, and the tracks sound awkward when played alone.

    That's my opinion anyway.

Whilst none of the tracks actually flow into one another melodically, I would say that the wondrous 'A Song for all Seasons' by Renaissance, (1978), should be listened to from first track to last, to get the full effect.

I get very impatient when people say, "Oh its so much better to download all your favourite tracks on to your iPod." No! I'd rather think of a single I like and then play the album to remind myself of the band's other songs. Taking an album off the shelf and putting it on to listen to, is a much more satisfying thing to do.

Oh my gawd, I really DO sound old now, don't I.

I love my ipod but I hate what it has done to the way I listen to music!
I do find that I'm now very impatient and if I don't get hooked by the music instantly it's forward shuffle to the next random piece of music that I don't really want to listen to either.
(I also do switch shuffle off about 50% of the time as well so I can choose what I listen to)
I do think there is an argument that it is good to go back to the old way and listen to the album all the way through every so often.

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is a prime example.

            Tubular Bells, of course!

            And Fairport Convention's "Babbacombe Lee".

Radioactivity by Kraftwerk has to be listened to from start to finish... it's sequenced so that each track flows naturally into the next and would never work on shuffle. One of the best albums ever IMO.

'Elizium' by Fields of the Nephilim, all the tracks run into each other.

                Tubular Bells as already mentioned

Re: Listening to an Album All the Way Through

i have loads of cassettes which i listen to all the way through regular.
thing is if you can skip to specific songs you dont give other songs the chance for you to like them.

every cassette,cd of an album should be listened to all the way through a good few times.

I get bored very quicky with music so i mix from listening to a complete album to selecting specific tracks from multipule albums to compose a playlist .I mainly listen to digital music rather than physical media.

I think that most Pink Floyd albums really need to be listened from start to finish. Whilst they may be individual songs they work best as a collection, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish you were here
