My favourite game is Final Fantasy VII which was released over here in winter 1997 for the original Playstation. It's almost become a cliché because so many people rank it as the greatest game of all time but for me nothing has ever touched it. I had never played anything else like it at the time and the fact it was spread over three discs made it stand out amongst other Playstation games of the time. Everything just mixes so well, from the memorable lead characters to the different locations, from the sprawling dark metropolis that is Midgar to the ghostly town of Nibelheim. FFVII also had an unbelievable soundtrack and the world map theme alone brings back so many memories. Twelve years later and I still play this game, the world of FFVII never loses its appeal.
Ocarina of Time on the N64 was released the year after Final Fantasy VII but I actually didn't play it until just a few years ago. It didn't take me long to realise why people rated it so highly though, what a fantastic game and a real triumph for the N64. I loved the way you could travel back and forth it time and catch a glimpse of Hyrule when evil has taken over the land, the final battle in Ganon's castle was brilliant.
Other favourites are Mario World, Tekken 2, Soul Calibur, Mario Kart & Mario Kart 64, Blast Corps (a forgotten N64 classic), Street Fighter 2, Crash Team Racing, Final Fantasy VI, Fighting Force and the N64 wrestling games.
When I was in the Army in Germany in 1985 (ish) I was on the first ever computer course for the (then) new computerised documentation system. When we were back in the Regiment and the system was up and running our Chief Clerk found what is now called an easter egg - space invaders had been built into the system but access was difficult and well hidden. How he found it is anybodys guess!! Oh that beloved green screen!!!!
