Luckily in my day (late 70's early 80's) there was no trainer bullying. What you done in them was what counted. Substance over style for a change.

Trainer bullying is rife now. What a sad world we live in.

I wore some horrendous branded trainers when I was in school. People used to take the mickey out of others but it was rare I was hassled because I was better at sports than most and saying something which offended me to my face often resulted in a punch in the mouth, the universal way kids learn that saying dumb stuff ends up in getting hurt. It did had a weird knock on effect where now I always buy the most ridiculous ones on the rack. I went through a phase of getting stuff like Air MAX but found that SHOX are superior in that they support the heel more rather than let it rock about. I'm really getting a bit old for these flamboyant trainers now. I really should know better.

I did have a pair of rugby boots made by Hi-Tec which did get me a lot of stick in my team, but I loved those boots. I've had all the big branded ones and none of them were a patch on the Hi-Tecs. I used various football boots as well but playing in the forwards mainly they didn't give me the support and traction needed for scrums and rucks. The Hi-Tecs did me about 4 years until one game I had an opposition player stand on my foot which bust the seam (and bruise a big proportion of my foot!), they gradually fell apart after that happened.

I was super obsessive with all my sports shoes, I spent as much time cleaning the mud off them as I did wearing them.

Trainer bullying was rife in my school, becoming a major problem in around 89/90. Bad brands were Gola, Dunlop, Hi-tec, Ascot and a few other obscure ones I can't remember. Top brands included Reebok, Nike, Adidas, Pony, LA Gear, SPX and British Knights.

Gola LOL. I remember someone getting ripped to bits about having a pair of Gola in PE. I never did PE in high school, i refused to do it as i did not have any interest (still don't)in sport.

My school was dead rough. When anyone wore their new trainers to school for the first time, kids called out, "New shoes" then stamped on them. This was a tradition back then.

I had these Dunlop Pacific trainers. I remember they had a (c)rap netting over the toe which let in water when you stepped in any puddles. I never knew my mum paid so much for them though. Looking at them now, they are not worth £27 from the catalogue price.

I thought that Pony where quite a good make in the 1980s I seem to recall, Escorteclipse. Diadora were similar too as a quite widely acknowleged good makers of Trainers I recall too - luckily though my School never had the "Trainer Hierachy" or if it was to happen it had never got to where it was like this, where I lived in the late 1980s when Trainers became as popular. I don't know if other members can recall, but another thing I recall about Trainers in the 1980s - is that they often became refered to as Tennis Shoes or Badminton Shoes etc - which in a way is a way I guess I was unawre of them being popular - though I am thinking/wondering - may-be this might have been a thing that was only relevant to certain areas and regions possibly!

The trainer status started in my school in about 1991 when i was just starting year 8, Reebok Pump where the in thing and they where dear aswell, i recall over a 100 quid i think. My school was ruthless for teasing if you had the wrong clothes which looking back is pretty sad, but i think it might be worse now. Like the lad who turned up to a party i went to, who turned up in "Airzone Trainers" and got crucified.

maybe im old but i never wore trainers to school.
i don remember many kids in school wearing trainers when i was there.

but yeah i remember pony im sure i wore there trainers i never cared much for what make i wore.
as long as thet fitted me where comfy that was good enough.

my mum bought me mine anway in the early days.

i cant remember trainers been called tennis shoes etc where iam back when i was a kid.

I've never had problems from anyone about which sort of trainers I wear, & can't recall spending more than £40-50 on a decent branded pair.

The adidas barrington trainers are £250 because of how rare they are but your totally right escorteclipse £250 for a pair of trainers is just ridiculous.
I can't see them selling who in there right mind would spend that sort of money for USED trainers.

Started well before that, mate. I went to secondary school from 1982 to 1988, and I remember the snobbery starting in the mid 80's.

I did not know it started in the mid 80s, i thought it started with Reebok Pump in the early 90s. I was lucky i have never been into wearing trainers. I feel sorry for kids today, no shoe is worth £250! I bought a K reg Ford Mondeo on ebay for less then that with 4 months T&T.

I am unsure if I can recall these Trainers - maybe ones similar, but I recall in the 1980s when names there was what was equal to the "Stan Smiths" of today that sort of resemble the Barrington ones. I am unsure if other members can recall (though have forgot the name, as I have not searched for it/or looked at in a long while) a Retro Type Trainers Forum, which was excellent for 1980s/1990s Trainers made, though I am unsure if it still is online. It was a great reference indeed I found/thought.
